I was using the computer narrator to play the part of the android, and started to create the character Ness and her spaceship PersephoneMy second book, Space Drop, is set chronologically as a direct follow-on tale of Drive Coil, and has more character development.     Chapter 1: Egrass Station

    The Persephone stayed in the orbit around the holding station. The station was in fact a dusty, lifeless chunk of rock, that itself was a moon to Egrass. As the second planet in its system it was a busy trading hub, well located for the surrounding sector planets. Hence its common name: Traders.

    Hardly any holding ever occurred for this long, but this was not due to inefficiency of the docking port authority. They were known as some of the most efficient and business orientated space ports in this sector. It was Ness that had decided to stay in orbit a bit longer. She had to take stock of the situation she and the Persephone were in. The port authority had no problem with it.

    Captain, you can stay as long as you wish, was the message from the port scheduling officer.

    In her best formal radio voice, Ness replied, Thank you, I will advise our estimated time for docking.

    The speakers came on shortly afterward, with the follow-on message that she was expecting. The port reminds you that due to the circumstances of your arrival we have withheld the usual charge. Currently you have two standard time days remaining on the concession. Regrettably, a small fee may be charged to your account thereafter.

    She transmitted, "Copied, two days remaining. Persephone out, then with her mouth almost closed she uttered a cynical whisper, Bastards, always want money at some point."

    She turned off the com panel and slowly leaned back in her seat. Alone on the bridge she quietly evaluated the situation. Her ship had a damaged drive, and there may even have been hull damage from the inadvertent departure from hyperspace. The last few trades had not been high yielding runs, and her funds were low. The cargo holds were almost
