FOREWORD
Go on, live your life, enjoy it, I am already dead.
These were the words of a Vietnam Veteran I encountered in 1999 while distributing meals and clothes to the homeless in Sacramento, CA. I had no idea this one encounter would dig into my caring spirit the way that it did. Typically, I would offer any man or woman in need something to eat. Most would accept, for meals were probably far and few between. I waited for a response and if the opportunity presented itself, I would share the good news of Christ, pray with them, and hopefully plant a seed. I always believed that taking care of a physical need would plant a spiritual seed. This one divine moment led me to stay and listen for a few extra minutes. He parked his shopping cart which carried his treasures of life and he humbly accepted the modest McDonalds meal I provided. As he unwrapped the yellow cheeseburger package, he prepared to speak. He took a sip of the orange drink to wet his whistle and he simply stated thank you.
Then without warning, a story followed which garnered my undivided attention.
He began his story with who he was. No name, no title, just a Vietnam veteran. He opened up to me about his struggles within the last two decades, emphasizing that civilian life was not as easy a transformation as many would think. His family turned their back on him for it was not an easy task to deal with a veteran who had seen unnatural things. His family disappeared in his most needed time, leaving him alone to deal with his unstable mental state. His country in his opinion, the wonderful United States of America, let him down by not providing adequate help, especially for those that served in Vietnam. Ill will and poor treatment of veterans was swept under the rug. He had no love to turn to so it was easy to love alcohol and drugs because they love you to death. Literally! When he spoke about love, it was my opportunity to speak about Christ. I encouraged him and although he didn't accept Christ as his Savior, he still thanked me for caring enough to stop. Then, he left me with the words Go on, live your life, enjoy it, I am already dead.
I left this forgotten veteran on that warm night with a handshake, but his grip was more than a physical embrace; it was a mental imprint that was stamped in my mind. It took ten years to pull this experience from my memory banks to now use my talents to play my part in dealing with the issue of homeless vets.
This experience prompted research and gave me an avenue to voice my opinion about the well-being of veterans. It has led me into the lives of those that have bravely fought in wars, often not knowing why. Why did I have a heart and concern about the families that have lost loved ones in those same wars? The answer was simple, it could have very well been my family in harms way. This unknown vet could have been my father. He could have been my uncle or brother. This encounter along with multiple articles on veteran mistreatment led me to author this book.
One might ask how a person who has never experienced war or served in the Armed Forces could write about soldiers and their families. How could a person really understand the deep thoughts felt in the hearts of soldiers? I believe any American who has heartfelt feelings for our troops need not fight the physical war, but must fight for these soldiers through other means. We are all at war, not just soldiers and our government. My means to fight this war is to write and encourage my fellow Americans who proudly wear that special uniform. I
