Chapter One
For once it was a beautiful day. They seem to be very few and far between these days here on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. What a joke! Global warming! It had really screwed things up. Sunny days were a thing of the past, most of the time the sky is filled with clouds or it is just plain raining. But for once this morning was beautiful. The sky was a wonderful blue, the sun was shining and there was only a slight breeze blowing, unfortunately though I was unable to enjoy it, due to the fact that I was on my way to Tafe in my little white Hyundai.
As I daydreamed about the things I could be doing today, I caught a flash of red in my rear view mirror and was suddenly passed by a Mazda Rx7. It was in mint condition the paintwork seemed to gleam in the light as the sun shone down upon it. The windows were heavily tinted and it was hard to see inside the car, but the driver’s arm was resting out the window. The car must have had every accessory imaginable attached to it. Any car junky would have loved it, it really was quite impressive.
Instead of speeding off it seemed to stay just ahead of me and I was sure the driver was watching me from his mirrors. Jack’s Mannequin’s ‘La La Lie’ was blearing through my speakers, from my USB, plugged into the car stereo, as my car travelled behind the mystery driver making its way up Nambour hill.
As we both approached the traffic lights to turn left to head towards the Tafe, the mystery driver seemed to calculate exactly the precise time needed for my vehicle to stop behind him for the red signal. As we sat there waiting for the lights to change in our favour, I tried to take in the man behind the wheel of the Mazda. I could see his eyes and a small portion of his face through the rear view mirror of his car and what I saw melted my heart. His hair was dark and wavy and sat just above his shoulders. His skin was incredibly white and as his arm lent on the edge of his window, I picked up a tattoo of a darkened apple on the inside upper part of his muscular arm. As I sat there waiting for the lights to change to green, my world seemed to stand still and my heart fluttered with excitement watching this magnificent male specimen before me drive off in the same direction as I was to head.
When I approached the last roundabout to the Tafe, I noticed that he looked back towards me, slowing his vehicle as if to make sure I made eye contact with him through the rear view mirror, then just as I became mesmerized, he powered up his vehicle and sped off in the other direction.
I continued on my way, lost in a dream, thinking of this amazing guy, wondering if it was going to be at all possible to see him again, hoping that it would be a possibility in the future and also wishing that if we did meet, that he would notice me too.

I knew as I sped past her car that my future would change but I just could not help myself, I had this urge to somehow make my presence known. Watching from a distance was taking too much of my restraint and I needed to get closer.
As I made eye contact with the girl something inside of me changed and I knew I needed more. Whether in the future my decision turned out to be a mistake or not it was a mistake I was willing to make.
Just before I was about to hit the accelerator peddle and speed off into the traffic I noticed the black Mercedes pull out into the traffic up ahead and I knew that I would have to stick closer to her car and try to distance them from her. Luck was on my side when they drove through the intersection ahead of us and the traffic light changed to red ensuring her car was distanced from them.
As we waited for the light to signal us to turn I looked back at her through my mirrors and was surprised to catch her looking at me. Her hair shone in the sunlight streaming through her window and I could see that her breathing was a little fast as though she had walked a steep hill and I wondered if she was okay. Watching her watching me was a little unsettling. My senses seemed to be in tune to hers even though we were separated by the metal surrounding our two cars.
Time seemed to stand still as my eyes locked onto hers through the mirror and I knew that I was not going to be able to back off from this path I was about to follow. My decision had been made in that short moment when my foot hit the accelerator pedal and I moved my car past hers.
I wondered if I would be able to complete my intended mission now that I had such close contact with her. It was something I would have to consider and maybe discuss with the others.
Thinking of the others, I suddenly caught the flash of black behind her car as Xavier’s Hummer pulled in behind hers and reality brought me back to existence. The signal arrow turned green and I turned the corner watching her through my rear view mirror.
As we reached the roundabout I decided to turn in the other direction leaving Xavier and Bliss to cover our charge, but before moving away I stole one last look behind me catching her gaze which made my mouth water and my heart race.
I knew that I would need to return that afternoon to catch a glimpse of her again.

I parked my car and made my way up to my first lecture. I noticed that once again a cloud cover had moved in and what was a beautiful morning had turned into a dreary sort of day. That was typical of the weather nowadays. As I passed other students, I overheard gossip about a new female student starting today. Everyone was talking about her looks, she seemed to be making quite an impression on the people around here.
As I walked into the lecture room I was also taken by her beauty. This girl stood at about six foot and her body was fit and muscular and she stood on a pair of legs which a sculptor could not do justice to. Her skin seemed to be almost translucent and flawless. She had long blond hair which was thick and wavy and was cut in layers. Framing her face were streaks of black and red and even though we were inside she wore glasses which were tinted. I noticed as she stepped near a window which let in more light the glasses darkened with the extra light shining into her face and she was hooked up and listening to an iPod. Her clothes were trendy and a bit Goth and of course mostly in the colour black and she wore an amazing amount of jewellery. She had lots of piercings, but instead of looking tacky they looked really good on her, they seemed to make up her total look. As she walked, it seemed as though she glided, she moved with exceptional grace and poise as though her feet were not touching the ground.
I watched the impact of her presence on the other students as I found it entertaining, they seemed to unconsciously avoid any close contact with her and some seemed uneasy, others watched her every move and whispered about her to their friends. I was finding her interesting to watch and enjoyed the experience of observing the interaction between her and the other students. During the course of the day she had lifted her hair up from her shoulders and I noticed a small tattoo on the back of her neck an apple of all things. It was exactly like the one the guy this morning had on his arm. Was there some cult starting here on the coast? Or was I just going mad?
My day went along as usual, I talked to some of my friends and listened with interest to the lessons, taking notes and interacting when necessary to the people around me, but I just could not forget the guy from this morning.
I don’t know why, but there was just something about him which I could not get out of my head. He seemed to be engraved into my mind, my soul and my being. An unusual feeling to have for someone I hadn’t even met yet!
At the end of the day as I walked to my car in the parking lot, I noticed that the new girl was picked up by a red Mazda and it seemed to be the exact same one I had followed this morning. The same guy looked to be driving it as well and I thought to myself, Oh well, that’s another one out of the line up of possible boyfriends!
and I giggled at my own inward comment. I continued walking over to my car feeling a little low and my heart felt a sadness that I did not understand. Then the hurt set in and I realized that I was feeling upset by this guy being with another girl, and I didn’t even know him.
As I turned the key in the door of my car, the red Mazda slowed to cruise by me on its way to the exit. I turned without thinking and locked eyes with the male driver. My heart skipped a beat, he was just gorgeous. His wavy dark hair framed a strong handsome face with eyes the colour of emeralds, rimmed with long black lashes. I just could not get enough, I wanted to continue to look into that face for ever, and he smiled back at me, catching me off guard, showing perfect white teeth. He hit the accelerator peddle and zoomed off into the traffic, leaving me feeling a bit foolish and somewhat embarrassed.
I started my car and headed home to get ready for work. I had a part time job at a local restaurant and took a few shifts during the week to make ends meet. I spent the rest of the afternoon before starting work wondering if I would ever meet this guy who had such an impact on me at first sight! Hoping I would, I got dressed and made my way to the kitchen down stairs to get something to eat before I had to go.
Mum was there preparing dinner for my Dad and my brother. As I opened the fridge to take out ingredients to make a sandwich she asked, How was your day, Jazz?
I just shrugged my shoulders and mumbled some illegible comment in return and continued to create my sandwich. I walked out of the room and sat down to watch some TV and eat my snack. Flicking through the channels I decided to watch some news on channel seven and was interested in a story about a gang of thugs who had hassled some innocent girl on a street corner. They had gotten away and she had been severely injured. Witnesses had reported that they had seemed to use supernatural forces to get through the traffic to reach her and vehicles had been damaged in the process. The story seemed so bizarre that it held my interest for the time it took me to demolish the food I had made.
Once I had finished, I walked back upstairs and started getting ready for work, when my phone rang, my friend Julia was on the other end. Hi Jules, how’s it going?
I asked.
Just calling you to find out your plans for the weekend, do you want to go to the club with me and Erica?
she asked.
Without hesitation I answered her question with, Nothing better to do, what time are you thinking?
Yeah, sounds like fun!
I’ve got to go now, got to go to work, I will ring you later.
I said my goodbyes and went into the bathroom to shower and get dressed.
I returned to find mum in the kitchen putting the finishing touches to the family meal. She was always so organized. Her love for all of us showed in even the mundane tasks she did. I leaned over to kiss her on the cheek, said goodbye and walked outside to my car and drove to the restaurant.
It wasn’t a bad job as it was only a little suburban restaurant and most of the time I didn’t have to work too hard. Tonight turned out to be a slow one and I was starting to set up some of the tables ready for the next session when I looked up and noticed a strikingly beautiful group of people walk in through the front door.
Three gorgeous guys who just took my breath away, one of them I was sure was the Mazda guy. All of them were just breathtaking! The patrons inside the restaurant noticed their entrance too. The only girl with them was the blond from Tafe this morning, no doubt she could round up a bunch of hot guys, unlike me.
All four of them were perfect physical specimens, tall, pale skinned and strikingly beautiful. My eyes rested upon the guy of this morning, I just could not pull myself away. He moved with the same grace and slickness as the others with him, but there was something different about him. It was like he had a magnetism which just spread out around him.
He stood just over six foot, his body just rippled with muscles. I could see the muscles across his stomach flex underneath his tee-shirt as he walked across the room to a table where Cleo, the other waitress working with me tonight, had led them to.
As Cleo proceeded to sit them at the table, I gathered up menus and took them across. On the way over I was so nervous I tripped over my own feet just before I approached the table, nearly landing in red Mazda guys lap. Before I did he lifted his arm and caught my body across the waist to stop me from falling completely. I apologized for my clumsiness, handed the menus to Cleo and hurried away from the table, completely embarrassed. I watched them as Cleo explained
