About this ebook

As a general applicant student in the Twilight Academy, Layta's heart is set on the rank of Twilight Knight. Her dream is impossible unless someone sponsors her. Shatila Briston is the last person she'd expect to offer her that sponsorship. Layta is overjoyed to accept and receives her first assignment as a Twilight Knight. It seems simple enough, but everything is jumbled upon her arrival. It seems that anything that can go wrong, will. In the desert, on her own, with no one but herself to rely on, can Layta survive? Or will the wind finally blow her away? Book Two in the Twilight Knight series.

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I always slept in whirlwinds. They soothed and stimulated in the same instant. The wind that spiraled through the Twilight Academy comforted and revitalized my quiet self with the snippets of news from every nook and corner, playing it by my ears. There are a handful of spaces where it was safe enough to nap. The entire hallway, ceiling and more than one exit were visible from here. More than one exit was always a good thing. As someone gifted with the talents of a wind elemental, one of the best perks was converting my entire body to air and finding a good spot to sit and spin for awhile.

Today, I wished I hadn’t chosen this particular corner, because of the most recent Twilight Knight-turned-Titan who never failed to annoy me. In all her six-feet of armored glory, Shatila Briston stood arguing in the hallway with the youngest in Twilight Mastery, Master Dugene. I stopped counting their fights years ago. It seems like they fight everywhere and I can always hear them, because I can hear the wind. It’s hard to tune out the wind when it’s everything you are.

…and that’s none of your business-!

I winced at her loud voice. She tossed her head, snappy ponytail bouncing with the movement. Her hair was the sole feminine touch to her warrior-figure. Today, it stood out more than usual.

…I am not making it my business. It’s a simple question. How many times do we have to go over this? I am not some…

The expression on Master Dugene’s face could melt rock. I didn’t blame him. Every time I heard one of their arguments, I wound up with a headache—like clockwork. I never knew why they were always at each other’s throats.

Eavesdropping was pointless, because Shatila always knew when I was around. It didn’t matter if I was sure I was invisible, I’d never been able to fool her. Something was always off about with her famous temper. A temper so unpredictable and volatile that over a dozen of our certified training masters refuse to spar with her, regardless of her special gift of The Sight. I was amazed she’d made it to the Titan rank. No one expected her to pass the test.

She arrived late to the ceremony and in such deplorable condition that the Titan Judges had been forced to run her through three complete healing phases—onstage—before she’d been declared fit enough to take the trials.

She looks fine now, kind of bored. No, her face just stays that way. No wonder Master Dugene is so red. I bet he didn’t get any rest with all those emergency reports last night. I hate it when she does this—he probably does too. Doesn’t she care? He’s just trying to do his job! If it wasn’t for him, I would never have made it into the application pool for the academy and he’s been able to pull the kind of strings that no one else around
