    Chapter 1

Miles from nowhere, off the road to nowhere, a gray and desolate prison bakes under a merciless sun surrounded by high colorless walls and rolled razor wire.

Inside, Isaiah Bone, black, tall, lean, powerfully built, in orange prison clothes, moves along a tile and concrete corridor.

J.C., Black, muscular, with old scars crossing is face, watches as Bone passes and nods across the corridor to Weepy, a small, vicious member of J.C.'s crew. Weepy passes the nod to Curtis, Ratchet and Razor, all part of the gang. The gang looks down the hall to a guard who turns the other way.

Bone enters the archway to the latrine. There is no door. He moves to a urinal.

Curtis guards the latrine door, nodding J.C., Ratchet, Weepy and Razor inside. Weepy drops a sharpened toothbrush down his sleeve into his hand. Razor lifts his foot, pulls a single-edged razor blade out of the heel and grips it between thumb and forefinger.

As Bone is pissing at the urinal he senses J.C., Weepy, Razor, Ratchet and Curtis behind him.

J.C. Speaks first, cocky, in charge, out to prove something, See this motherfucker here? This motherfucker think he's special. But look, Mr. Isaiah Bone ain't so special. He gots to piss just like everybody else.

That's right, Weepy says, like he's saying 'Amen,' in church.

J.C. goes on, Wants to be left alone, he says. Don't want to get mixed up with the rest of us niggas. Like we ain't shit, right?

Bone has not turned to look back. He flushes, ties the cloth strip that holds the prison pants up, I didn't say all that. I just want to do what I have to do and get out. He turns around, All of this? He opens his arms indicating the latrine and the prison, Its yours. You can have it. He moves to the sink and washes his hands.

J.C. moves closer, Shit don't work like that here, homeboy. In here you're either our dawg or our bitch. Know what I'm sayin'?

Bone starts past J.C. No rush. J.C. puts his hand on Bone's chest. Bone stops. In each others face now.

J.C. Really pushing it, Think you're a bad motherfucker, don't you? Yeah, fool, I seen you doing all that kung fu shit in your cell at night. You're put together, too, I'll give you that. But a whole lot of put-together motherfuckers get their asses turned out in here everyday. I had be a put together bitch in here used to beg me to let him suck my dick cause he knew the shit would happen to him he ever said no. Motherfuckers just don't have the heart to take the pain that goes with saying no.

    Razor again, That's right.

J.C. Is really feeling cocky now, Fact, I could use me a blow job right now, bitch. We all could, ain't that right? J.C. looks at his crew, grinning. The others grin, too.

Bone sees the weapons in their hands.

Weepy grabs his crotch, Shit, always use me a blowjob. Seven days a week!

Hear that shit? J.C. eyes Bone, Seven days a week, three hundred sixty-four days a year - we'll give you Christmas off, 'cause that's the day Jesus was born.

    They all laugh, except Bone.

You want your dick sucked, get one of these bitches to do it for you. They all look like they've had practice. Bone shoves past J.C.

J.C. drops the handle of a shank out of his sleeve and moves fast, stabbing at Bone's kidney. Bone catches J.C.'s wrist and twists it. The snap of bone and pop of tendon echoes on the tile walls. J.C. screams in pain.

The others are taken by surprise.

Bone holds J.C. up on his toes by his broken wrist, keeping the pressure on, You were talking about heart, Bone says, How's yours? Suddenly Bone unleashes a sledgehammer fist into J.C.'s heart. J.C. gasps. He can't breathe. He begins to shake in uncontrollable tremors. His entire body jerks in a standing seizure before he drops to the floor clutching his chest over his heart.

Suddenly Ratchet swings his blade at Bone's ribs. Bone parries the blade past him and ridge hands Ratchet so hard in the throat that it crushes his windpipe. Blood sprays out of Ratchet's mouth.

Curtis stabs up at Bone's eyes. Bone slips it, catches the blade just as it passes his left eye, then grabs Curtis' hand and breaks Curtis' elbow over his shoulder.

Weepy stabs at Bone's belly. Still holding Curtis' arm over his shoulder, Bone parries the shank with an outside crescent kick of his right foot, then kicks up into Weepy's groin with the same foot, then hook kicks him again in the back of the head driving him to the floor. Weepy's face hits the concrete floor hard.

Razor slashes his razor blade across Bone's forearm, cutting him. He slashes again backward at Bone's face. Bone spins, using Curtis as a shield. Razor slashes Curtis' face by mistake. Curtis screams and grabs his face.

Razor slashes at Bone again. Bone dodges, catches Razor's wrist, snaps it and in a lightning move takes possession of the blade from between Razor's fingers and slices Razor's wrist with his own blade. Razor screams, grabbing his arm as a gush of blood sprays over the ceiling and wall.

Bone then grabs Razor by the back of the neck and slams his face into the urinal so hard that Razor's forehead breaks the front of the porcelain off the urinal. Razor drops unconscious to the floor. Two of his bloody teeth remain on the bottom of the urinal.

Bone steps back and looks around at the carnage. The room is quiet now. Five convicts are bleeding on the floor. Three of them are unconscious. J.C. is dead. Only Weepy is still conscious on the floor, shaking. Bone steps over him like he'd step over a puddle in the street and washes his hands in the sink. Blood swirls in the white sink.

Calm now, Bone speaks quietly, You tell every motherfucker inside these walls what happens when you fuck with me. Bone rolls the sleeves of his prison shirt up covering the razor slash wound on his forearm. He looks past the bodies and the blood stained walls and eyes Weepy,
