About this ebook
A dictionary defining the meanings of many German surnames found in the United States. There are enough short names or definition to define names not in the dictionary. Mainly phone books were used to find names that look German to me.

Introduction
PLEASE READ ! ! !
IMPORTANT: Names are listed by Number only. These numbers replace consonants. The vowels are ignored. The names are listed according to a modiIed version of the Soundex Code, which is used in genealogical research. Each consonant in a name is given a number representing that type of consonant. These translations are for German names only. If they are any other language, the meanings probably do not apply.
If your device has a search function, then search for your surname. If not then you have to find out the number of your name, and look it up by the number.
Instructions for obtaining the number of your name:
A, E, I, O, U, Y, and H are ignored. (If there are no consonants in the name look under 0 (zero)).
B, F, P, PF, V and W are 1. (When W is replacing U, as in Hauer, Hower, ignore it.
C, Ck, G, J, K, Q, SC, X and Z are 2. (Note CK and SC are not 22, but 2).
D, DT and T are 3. (Note DT is not 33, but 3).
L is 4.
M and N are 5.
R is 6.
If there are any double letters, as tt, ignore one of them. J may be a Y in some names, e.g., Jaeger, Yaeger. Use a 2. If you name has an SG or SK in it, and you do not find the name, try it without the G or K. It may be SCH in modern German. In Indo-European the G or K is sometimes written GH, KH or Q. This is a hard K, as in the Scottish loch
.
Example: Schmidt: 2(SC), ignore (H), 5 (M), ignore (I), 3 (DT).: therefore the number is 253.
In the definitions of longer names I put a semicolon between the parts of a name when defining it, e.g., Flintstein (Name): Flint; stone (definition): Flint; stein, (German). In order to save space a slash (/) has been used to separate two or more meanings, which match the other part of a name, e.g., Weisshof (Name): Wise / white / wheat; farm (definition); Weis / weiz / weizi; hof (Old High German). Name endings that mean descendent of
or son of
are: -er, -ing, -inger, -s, -sch, -z, -son and -sohn. The endings -sohn, or -son can also mean Sun, the sun goddess, and -er can mean Er, the earth goddess. If your name has any of these endings, and you cannot find your name, try it without the ending. Adding G, K, GH, KH, or Q in Indo-European means frequent and repeated action. Adding D, DT, or T to a word makes it something concrete.
Some facts about German names:
In the development of German names over the centuries, the initial G, K, S, SK, GH, KH or Q has softened. Many names that once started with or contained a K or G have now softened to an H or have disappeared altogether. There is often more than one translation to a name. Choose the one that best applies to you. If you are blonde, us the name that means bright. If you are healthy, us a name meaning healthy. Many names are the name of a town. Also, many names mean two things at once: an older Indo-European name and a newer occupational name. Jewish names tend to be more modern, are often the names of stones (ruby, diamond, etc.), or in honor of a great Rabbi. Any Jewish name beginning with B R, probably means Ben Rabbi Something. Double Name Example: Hofberg (Name); farm; keeper
and abundance; shelterer
. Any name meaning Something; tree / pole / shelter, shelterer
usually means the Ash Tree, the fruitful, powerful, beloved, good, beneficial, earth, harvest tree.
Any Indo-European name that means plant growth or growth, really means strong growth through the divine protection of the old gods. Indo-European words are religious words forming short prayers in their names; all trying to ensure a safe, early, large harvest. Since nearly everyone was a farmer, no harvest meant no food and starvation. I am sure that is why so many names want big, fresh early safe harvests through the divine power of the old gods. Symbols and names of the old gods were also used in names.
Indo-European or Proto-Indo-European is a language that is theorized to have been spoken about 6000 to 8000 years ago somewhere in Europe or Anatolia. All Indo-European words are completely guesswork, and the best meanings that have been theorized. High German is the German of southern Germany, where the land is high: hills and Alps. Low German is the German of northern Germany, where the land is low and more flat. Old High German and Old Low German (Old Saxon) were spoken from 800-1100 AD (later in the country). Middle High German and Middle Low German were spoken from 100 to 1500 AD. Modern German is the language since 1500 AD (at least in the cities and in literature).

If your device can search, use that to look up your name. If your name is short, as Meyer
, keep looking until you find it by itself, and not in a longer name. If you are using a computer, use Control-Enter to find the name.
There are no umlauts listed. They are listed as: ae, oe, and ue. If name not found, figure out the number of the name using the instructions above and use the Links listed below, and search for the name.
