Chapter One
Veronica Hall-Aquirre paced back and forth on the deck. The heel of her shoes tapped on the hardwood floor with each step. She growled and picked up pace as the voices in her head grew louder and louder. Evil. You are evil! Those dreadful words repeated over and over, louder each time it spoke. Evil! Her hands flew up to her ears in an effort to block out the voices, but she knew she couldn't block something that was in her mind. It was her own mind calling her evil. Her head pounded harder, matching with each beat of her heart.
Mid-step, Veronica dropped to her knees and screamed to the heavens. Tears formed and slid down her cheek uncontrollably as the pain inside ate at her soul. The need to kill, to take the life of a human, overtook her mind. If she didn't satisfy the feeling soon, she knew she wouldn't be able to control it. Evil!
Oh my God! Make it stop,
Veronica howled into the night like the beast she was. Her fangs extended in her gum, aching to penetrate warm human flesh. Her mind told her if she drunk the essences of a human straight from their veins, the ache would go away. She believed it would. Veronica quickly vanished the thought of drinking blood directly from a human. If she did, she would kill that person. She had no self-control at this moment and she wouldn't take a human life to make herself feel better.
Veronica closed her eyes and let the tears flow more. She would give her life to make the ache go away. To live your life in constant pain, day and night, would drive anyone insane. Not that she had very far to go from being insane from the beginning. However, the added pain only pushed her closer to the edge.
Veronica took several deep breaths before the pain subsisted to a point where she could stand on her own again. Quickly, she turned away from the moon's glare. The light still stung her eyes.
She wondered if others who were fighting the evil inside felt the pain she endured daily. If not, why did she suffer so much? At this point in her life, she wanted it to end so badly that she was willing to take her own life. Just a couple of minutes in the sun would do justice. It all sounded so good. A quick way out of the pain. Nevertheless, if she killed herself, she knew her best friend, Rose, would miss her the most and Veronica never wanted Rose to suffer any more than she already had.
Veronica sat on the chair on the deck, closed her eyes and concentrated on the pain that had burrowed deep inside her heart. Taking a deep breath, she tried not to think about the hunger inside her. It was very unusual that now when the pain hit her, it was harder for her to make it go away. It had been a harder fight since she had been having those dreams. Dreams about him.
