She traveled alone through a ruined landscape. Broken buildings lined the road, their crumbling walls greened over with creepers; flocks of chattering starlings lifted as she approached and then wheeled around above her before descending into the ruins again.

She did not know where she was going, only that she could not go back.

She closed her eyes and tried to see the city as it had once been: clean lines, walls that were not broken, highways that were not cracked; automobiles and airplanes. Lights. The memory was unusually vivid, but brief. When she opened her eyes, all was ruins once more.

The past was past. It was no use to her.
