    Acknowledgments

Our best thanks are due to Betty Hernandez for transcribing recorded interviews; to Sonia Ness for her wise copy editing of the manuscript; and to Rob Buzek, who found time in a busy life for the cover design and implementation.

We are especially grateful to the Ascended Masters for their help in planning this book, and whose words Toni has gratefully channeled. Special mention is due our new friends, whom we call by one name from their many lives on Earth: Dorothea, Temujin, and Thomas. We were challenged and helped by their frank answers to our questions. We wonder if any historians reading what they said will be brave enough to include these comments and explanations into their own record of history. If so, our thanks will also be due to them. Even a brief mention in a footnote will brand them as pioneers.

    Section 1

    Listening to the Masters

    Peter Watson Jenkins

When my father retired in the 1960s, he decided the time had come for him to write a novel. He worked on the plot and discussed it with the family. In the story, a small group of amateur radio buffs decided to scan the ether with their equipment in hope of making contact with people who, like them, might be broadcasting with radio equipment in a far-off galaxy. Then, after a while, their radio equipment transmitted a voice speaking in a strange language and they assessed the voice to be that of a woman. Based on technical grounds they believed she must be living on another planet, though they could not prove it.

My father never finished the book. I guess Star Wars and sci-fi literature did that for him. I don’t know for certain, but he may have realized that the rest of his novel would be consumed by details of scientists pouring accusations of trickery and fraud on the poor radio buffs. A few scientists might be disposed to believe in the voice coming from far away in the cosmos. Science itself, however, would have no system of verification to judge if the experience was fact or fiction.

This issue of proof concerning occult or spiritual things arises for a huge number of people claiming to have had a near-death experience (NDE), leading them to believe in life after death. Some of them are well known; the psychologist Carl G. Jung is one such person. Many have recalled having been interviewed by a being of light they have described in many different ways. Science doesn’t seem too eager to accept such evidence even though it has involved millions of people all over the world, and the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDS) claims members everywhere except Antarctica.

Looking at another, comparable, occult example, we find that over the past sixty years, ten million people are reliably estimated to have undertaken sessions of past-life regression hypnosis (PLR). A high proportion of them claim to have experienced the existence of their past lives, and of life between human lives (LBL), and that they, too, have had evidence of reincarnation. These assertions also fail to convince the skeptics, even including some who are personally convinced of reincarnation. For them, established scientific methods come first. Were these people to fall into a hole in the road, in order to remain true to their beloved method, I suppose they would deny the hole existed until they had taken precise measurements and compared the hole with others in the vicinity!

I prefer to believe that the very fact of the large numbers of people so involved ought to point to the possibility of life after death, and so on. Scientific method is clearly inadequate when it comes to nonphysical energy, although when receiving reports of an NDE or details from a successful PLR or LBL, one is wise not to embrace the evidence without careful thought about its origin.

Of course, this sort of disbelief is exactly the position my colleague, the clear channel Toni Winninger, has to battle at times. Whether she is giving a reading in public, or I am writing about the answers souls of famous individuals have made to us in our channeled interviews, the reaction of some cautious people is that we couldn’t prove such contact with the spirit world, so it cannot be trustworthy. Following the teaching of their church, others call channeling the work of the devil. This view is often given without consideration of the actual content of the communication.

The interesting thing about such denials is that the spirit guides with whom we talk, the Ascended Masters (also called the Masters of the Spirit World), are very accepting of skeptics. They tell them to be willing to go along with their feelings. If any inner feeling should happen to be on the side of the Masters’ teaching, they should not dismiss it merely because their ego says otherwise. That’s all right, they say, believe whatever you can and leave the rest to be decided another time. After all, when it comes time for us to die, skeptics and believers alike, we will find out which view was right about life after death and the rest of the claims that Toni and I have made.

You may ask at what point there will be enough witnesses in the world who will affirm that the Masters have done us a great service in explaining the basis of our life here on planet Earth. Some believe that once an idea has caught on with a relatively small number of people, a critical mass will have been achieved and then, quite easily, most people will express their belief in the idea.

Human beings are strange creatures! We spend a fortune sending astronauts into space, with grandiose explanations of why they are on important missions. Yet if some were to hear on the radio the voice of a person from another galaxy, or if they were to attend a group reading and hear Toni Winninger answering a question by translating the Masters’ response, they might call it unbelievable nonsense.

This is the point where I must speak from the heart: I count it a real privilege to have been given the experience of asking questions and receiving replies from this group of mature individuals at Home on the Other Side. And I am amazed and humbled to say they are somewhat like me in the way our minds work. We know them as truly wise, loving, and given to gentle laughter.

The decade I have worked with the Masters started off with plenty of skepticism on my part, and I told them all about it. However, week by week in many conversations, the consistency of their message has been true for me. Even little difficulties of understanding between us have not increased my doubts. Some words and phrases they have used that sound a bit antique have contributed to my certainty: the Masters are truly a group of senior spirit guides at Home and not a figment of my imagination. I often wonder how I came to be so privileged as to deal with them, and I have been encouraged to promote their teaching.

Many people express thanks to the Masters, saying that listening to them has provided a way forward in their lives. The Masters have explained to Toni and me that their teaching is relatively difficult, and that other spirit guides work with different messages for those who come from other backgrounds. They all live in the dimension of unconditional love, which is their essence, so we know they will never judge other groups or guides making contact with people on Earth.

We notice that there are many differences among the successfully channeled spirit guides; the Masters talk about the journey of the soul, life lessons, and solving problems; the Abraham group communicating through Esther Hicks has a lot to say about our ability to visualize health and wealth. Altheris, the spirit group who recently started communicating through Simon Rowe in England, have a message about the oneness of the universe and how we should seek union and harmony in our own lives. The Masters see the variety in spirit messages as desirable, helping a wider range of humans than if there were only one voice and one message.

These thoughts naturally lead on to the way we choose to listen and assimilate messages from our guides. Many questions asked of the Masters by people at their first meeting are of a highly personal nature: grief, broken relationships, lost opportunities, and personal weakness. It is easy to miss asking the questions we really need to ask. Emotional situations make us fearful, although spirit guides do try to make the process easy for us. They respond to our questions; they do not seek to fill our ears with their own interests and ideas. So it has been helpful to have books that the Masters have worked out with us, ranging from pure teaching to a multitude of fascinating stories told by other souls, and answers given by celebrities.

Can our human society plan its future helped by the Masters? Their answer is simple. All souls need to understand there can be no direction given to us because our souls are all free to do our own thing. Freedom of choice is a universal rule; fate and destiny do not exist. Souls were created to give an individual response to the challenges life brings them. Prediction of the future and judgment on the past is not theirs to give. The best our guides can do is to tell us where we are at that moment, what their assessment is of the relevant issues we need to consider, and, sometimes, what they see as alternative ways for us to go forward.

    Communication with Spirit

The Masters, channeled by Toni Ann Winninger

Many people ask how it is that humans are able to talk with the non-physical beings, departed souls, and guides in the universe. There are a number of different ways in which it is done, and no two people use exactly the same technique, just as no two individuals sound exactly alike, use the same words, or draw on the same intonation.

The main types of such occult communication are referred to as channeling, mediumship, or psychic communication. Within the community there is no agreement on the definition of these terms, and some people use them interchangeably. To the spirits it doesn’t matter what you want to call it—it is a way for them to assist humans with their journey on Earth.

What is the contact like, you might ask? Well, it varies depending on the abilities of the receiver. Spirits may be seen (clairvoyance), either as they existed in their former lives or as they wish to project themselves. It is difficult for a lot of souls, particularly newly returned ones, to produce substance, or ectoplasm as it is sometimes called. The vision may appear as a shadow, an object familiar to both parties, or an orb. Orbs are generally spherical in shape and may have geometrical patterns or even faces visible in them. These appearances may be to the public or just in the eye of the receiver. Seeing clearly is quite rare. It is more common for the soul to put the desired picture in the psychic’s consciousness.

Hearing (clairaudience) is more common and is usually the speech being heard in the conscious mind. It is normally in the tone of the recipient’s own voice since a spirit, not having a body, has no voice box and therefore cannot reproduce a human voice. Occasionally their contact may come in the speaker’s voice if they have enough energy to vibrate the atmosphere to produce a wave of sound, similar to their former voice in a past life. It is also possible for some souls to stimulate the memories of the person to remember the sound of their loved one and hear anything said as having that timber.

The most common form of communication is through feelings (clairsentience). Souls may easily create enough of a disturbance in the Earth energy for the intended receiver to feel their presence. They may cause the sensation of someone sitting beside you, being behind you, or caressing your cheek. Emotional feelings of happiness, love, or contentment may come through. Since the soul who has returned Home is surrounded by unconditional love, all feelings are positive. If you sense feelings of fear, hatred, betrayal, regret, or revenge, they are emanating from a soul who is stuck on Earth and has not returned to the light.

Once souls have returned Home they become guides and advisors. They will never tell a physical person in definite terms what to do or not to do when engaging in an activity. They are bound by the universal law of freedom of choice—that each soul is responsible for its own learning and for making the decisions needed to achieve that goal.

Spirits may also communicate by sending familiar smells that you would associate with the departed. They may also call your attention to digital displays, music being played on the radio or TV, articles in magazines, ringing bells, or myriad other things that have significance for them and, hopefully, for you as well. This shows the importance of always being open and aware to the area around you—living in the NOW—so you don’t miss the message.

There are many ways that mediums, channelers, and psychics operate. Some of them enter into a trance in order to connect to the Other Side. Mostly, trance mediums have no recollection of what they said while they were in trance or during the entire period of unconsciousness. A very famous trance psychic, Edgar Cayce, was known as the sleeping prophet. Cayce was able to diagnose medical conditions and prescribe corrective measures for clients while totally unconscious. Notes where taken and transcribed by his assistants to deliver to the asker. He is known for his predictions of the future and his homeopathic prescriptions, which are still being used. His direction on how to learn to communicate with the universal consciousness? Become more spiritual.

Other mediums work with one spirit on the Other Side who takes over their body and delivers messages using their vocal cords. Some of these humans recall what has come out of their mouths, and others do not. Jane Roberts, with Seth, and J. Z. Knight, with Ramtha, are well-known examples. In these cases the single spirit would even have an effect on the vocal cords, changing the sound of the medium’s voice.

Conscious mediums are those who are fully aware of the material coming through them. The spirits may or may not cause a change to the medium’s voice or mannerisms. Souls may come individually, as in the case of Bashar to Darryl Anka, or in groups, as with Kryon delivering messages through Lee Carroll, and Abraham speaking through Esther Hicks.

Generally these examples are all considered to be mental mediumship since they involve transference to the unconscious and then consciousness of the psychic. There is another form called physical mediumship, which is rarer and includes the production of voices from the air and formation of a physical substance called ectoplasm out of the body of the medium. When objects are produced out of the air they are called apports and sometimes can be traced back to possessions that had belonged to those on the Other Side.
