Lia had always known that this day would come, but somehow, she still dreaded it. Training was complete, her Initiation was over…and now, it was time for her First Kill.

Ready? Myna grinned over her bare shoulder as they paused outside the bar entrance. The older girl smoothed her satin dress over her voluptuous curves. I’m almost a bit jealous of you, you know. There’s nothing like the first time.

Lia nodded tightly. How could she explain the fear and dread that was knotting her stomach? She knew that Myna would never understand. This was her duty; what she was born to do. What they were all born to do. And Myna and the others seemed to enjoy it.

Hey, don’t be nervous. You look gorgeous. Myna tucked a stray strand of Lia’s hair behind her ear. The lustrous, chestnut waves cascaded around Lia’s shoulders, setting off her pale honey skin and dark brown eyes. Myna looked her up and down approvingly, noting the way the thin silk dress moulded itself to Lia’s slim figure. Lia had followed instructions and dampened the material, so that the dress clung enticingly to every curve.

Don’t worry, kit, you’ll knock ‘em dead. Just don’t do it too quickly. Myna chuckled. Take time to select your prey. He will be your first and you’ll always remember him.

Inside the bar, it was dark and hazy, with mood lighting coming from shaded lamps in the corners. Music drifted down from overhead speakers—some throaty jazz singer crooning about lazy summers and hot lovers—mingling with the hum of conversation and laughter. Myna moved expertly through the crush of bodies and Lia followed quickly behind. Already she could feel male eyes on them as they passed, sense their stirring interest and hunger.

They paused as they reached the top of the stairs that led down to the lower level. Spread out below them was the main lounge filled with divans and loveseats, as well as huge potted fan palms and ornamental lamps scattered between the chairs. They gave the place a vaguely Oriental feel and provided secluded corners for couples to huddle behind. Myna smiled as she homed in on a lone man sitting on the nearest divan.

That one will do me. She caressed the jade bracelet around her wrist as she watched him.

Even in the dim light of the bar, Lia could see the vibrant, green glimmer of the jade against Myna’s pale skin. She glanced down at her own jade bracelet, which was still a dark olive, almost black.

Myna followed her gaze. "Don’t worry, yours will green soon enough. The first draining is always the most powerful. But remember, you have to focus to direct the yang energy—the male essence—through your body and into the jade."

Lia swallowed. I remember.

Myna smiled again. You’ll be fine. It seems like only yesterday that you were a half-grown kit scampering around the lair and now look at you… Good luck. I’ll see you later.
