    CHAPTER – Introduction

Since the Dawn of Man, fighting has been a way of life. In the beginning, fighting was for survival. Food, water, and shelter were the primary needs. The weaker either died or became of value to the stronger. If you had the ability to figure things out but not the strength, a teaming affect was afforded to mutual benefits. This grew into groups or tribes with each providing services for the community. However, that was threatened. Tribes began fighting other tribes over territory, food, and water rights. Although survival was the main driving force it wasn’t the only force. Survival from the elements and other tribes became overshadowed by the stronger, more powerful men within their own tribe. These men would take what they wanted whether food, water, shelter, or even women. Thus began the pecking order within a group.

But survival gave way to entertainment as it became sport to watch the King’s or Emperor’s fully armed Champion vanquish defenseless slaves or captors from territorial conflicts. The days of Gladiators were welcomed as it meant the spectator could watch the killing of helpless undeserving wretches and not get their own hands stained with blood. They would even participate by determining the peril of the hapless victim by giving them the thumbs up (letting them live) or the more common thumbs down (certain death).

But this entertainment still didn’t satisfy the blood thirsty lust buried within Mankind’s spirit. Wars between countries broke out. Greed was more the underlying reason. Leaders, whether Kings or Emperors, wanted more power, more land, to invoke their religion or way of life on another, or for just more respect. Some battles were started just because a man from one land looked wrong or lustfully at another man’s cherished woman which gave insult to her, her people, her love for her spoken man, and that man’s love for her. Wars broke out.

Wars, in the 20th and 21st centuries, encompassed the entire globe changing cultures and the last, World War III, costing the loss of life of over 1.85 billion people. That’s more than eighteen times the amount of people killed in battle of World Wars I and II combined. In addition, with the pestilence and famine that followed, the total death toll awarded to that war sored up another 2.4 billion lives lost. This one war is attributed for the reduction of the world’s population from 8.4 Billion before the war to 4.25 Billion ten years after it ended.

World War III was not between countries fighting for political power, but pitted culture against culture. Even similar to the Crusades between the 12th and 17th centuries, religious beliefs were challenged. The devastation in all countries was horrendous. Weapons of mass destruction were used to eliminate the loathsome foe. At its official end, the world was a changed place where a price was paid which was higher than anyone could have ever imagined. But then again, unofficially, it never really ended.

Born out of the world holocaust, came a desire for unity. As in 1945 following the end of as in World War II, came the formation of The United Nations. Its purpose was to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace. In the same light, four years after World War III ended, a World Government was established. Although similar to the United Nations in its purpose, they had more control over all international and some national matters. They were the final word on any disputes between countries. They would monitor the actions of leaders of all countries and determine their threat to their people, other countries, the economic structure, and the world itself. Any violation of their decision meant severe repercussions including global police intervention, removal from office, and, if deemed necessary, even assassination.

This governing body created a single monetary system which replaced all other monetary systems worldwide, and it was controlled electronically by the World Monetary Control Board. Identification cards doubled as money cards similar to the credit card systems of the 20th and 21st centuries. The banking system was very simple—if you had money, you would have it in your account and it was linked to your identification card. Also, no more multiple accounts from multiple banking institutions were created as there was only one bank. Correspondingly, the days of carrying cash for purchases was forever gone. But having money was just as hard to have as it was to get. Nevertheless, people did work and acquire an income to support their families. However, some became creative and yet primitive as the Barter System began reforming. Services were provided in exchange for food and lodging. Small corporations began taking care of the workers and families and in return, they would live and work as the corporations dictated.

One of the factors that made cultures and people feel separated was the different spoken and written languages. Therefore, everyone globally was required to learn and use the English language. This was the known as the common language. This is not to say each country and region could not speak their own language in their own homes and among their own friends. It did mean, however, you had to speak English in all public places allowing anyone in hearing distance to be able to understand what you were saying. Clarity of communication between people was the goal. Written language was just as hard for people. Newspapers, magazines, add promotions, and anything that was for the public had to be in English. Even a personal letter or message to a friend had to be in English as the correspondence was passed through public hands thus allowing anyone who read it knowledge of what you were saying. This infuriated most non-English speaking countries, but after a few years, this too became a reality. Privacy and personal culture through speaking or reading another language in public became non-existent. Today, the punishment for violating this order is too severe to imagine.

All of these changes in life were hard for everyone to accept. But it was this or total annihilation. World War III would have ended Mankind’s existence on Earth had it not been for a select few leaders and corporations realizing the end was at hand.

But the war was not the only problem the world was facing. Global warming was proving what experts were saying since the mid-20th century. However, they got the story only half right. The cause wasn’t from just Man’s stupidity through pollution; it was the suns natural expansion as well as the earth’s depleting atmospheric layers. What they got perfectly right was the effects of the warming affect. Flooding of many low-lying areas became a reality. The polar ice caps had shrunk to almost half their size as seen in that time. The ocean’s water level had risen twenty feet for some areas. Many areas where food was grown, was now under water causing food shortages throughout the world. Even with the reduction in the population, food was still a problem.

Since the war, the World Government banned personal weapons to protect the remaining populous. Even the high tech bow and arrows were banned. This was beneficial on an immediate basis following World War III because it eliminated many of the weapons that had been used during the war. However, a cry had gone out over the past thirty years for each country to have their control over their own people. Of course, specific guidelines and controls would have to be implemented for the individual governments to have this. This outcry was not just due to the numerous terrorist organizations that had cropped up and backed by some of the more aggressive countries. But the world government couldn’t keep up with all the movements of these groups and policing the aggressive countries was becoming more burdensome than expected. One problem that kept growing was the use of military weapons for personal use.

So where do I fit into all this? It’s the late 22nd century and I spent 23 years serving my country in the America Forces. They found I had a unique ability to go places and blend in. Not being noticed meant going where no one else could go, do what was required whether observation or action, and then getting out before anyone even realized I had ever been there. They also found I was very talented and quickly adept with a wide variety of military weapons. I had even created some weapons of my own to aid in my stealthy activities. Many of my weapons could not be detected by security and yet were more deadly than most military or conventional weapons. Also, my accuracy was extremely deadly (enfaces on the word deadly), whether close encounters or at great distances. I was assigned to Special Ops.

Although I worked and answered to the America Forces leadership, many of my special missions were orchestrated by the World Government and backed financially by large corporations. You might say I was their enforcer as well. Whether removing a single individual from a crowd, or wiping out an entire organization, I got the job done efficiently and very effectively. So, through my deadly acts, I became the most dangerous and most feared man on the planet.

CHAPTER 1 – Who are John Smith and Pristine?

At 1,000 feet beneath the waves, the pressure on the hull of my submarine was thirty one times that of sea level. This was where I love spending my time. No politics, no fighting, and no problems. The sea provided me with everything I needed—food, water, security. The love of a good woman however was something it can’t provide. For that experience, I would have to go ashore, remain incognito, find a willing companion, then depart as mysteriously as I arrived. However, that being said, I was still reminded why I chose the life here as I still get the annoyances of regular life.

Good morning, John, a soft female voice announced. As I opened my eyes, the room was dark and filled with the sweet smell of purified air. You wanted me to wake you at 0700, she continued. Slowly I rolled over from my back to my side placing my back to the bunk’s back wall, and continued to lie on this steel bunk covered only with a six inch mattress. I pulled my dark wool blanket across my curled up body to cover and protect myself from the draft caused by the air system.

Yeah, I responded groggily. I did, but I really didn’t think you were actually listening to me. I opened my eyes slowly and grunted, Turn on the damn lights.

Of course I was listening to you. There are microphones all over this…

Cutting her off, I interrupted and yelled, Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! I know you have microphones all over this submarine. I’m the one that installed them all, remember? My voice became more and more agitated and louder as I spoke. I also installed all the speakers and hardware, and then programmed you. And another thing…

This time it was her turn to cut me off. Alright John! the female voice interrupted with a tone denoting that of a very angry and insulted woman, I get the picture! It was quite evident I had struck a nerve that I should have left alone. She continued, Are you getting up? The lights in the room suddenly come on. Normally she would bring up the lights slowly allowing my eyes to adjust. This morning was not normal as she turned them on full intensity and my eyes felt a searing pain. For a minute I buried my face into my pillow to block some of the light. Yeah, I had pissed her off once more and again I groaned.

Slowly I brought my torso to an upright position and swung my legs out dangling them lazily over the side of the bunk. I brought my hands up to my head and drew my fingers through my scraggily neck length hair. Yeah, I’m getting up. Mumbling quietly to myself as I really didn’t want her to hear me, Why in the hell did I program you to sound like my ex-wife? I should have listened to that lunatic salesman. He said I should have a pleasant sounding woman programmed in and make sure it didn’t have a personality.

I heard that, the voice said with an irritated sound. With a bit of arrogance, she continued, Besides, you know you can’t live without me. Those words echoed deep inside my brain. The bone chilling memory of my ex-wife was now in the forefront of my mind as she would always remind me with that very phrase. She found she was wrong too.

I chuckled and began inching my way to the edge of the bunk. As my feet touched the cold deck, a
