INTRODUCTION
"Thing of Darkness
Thing of Evil"
--Paraphrased from Edgar Allan Poe
Creatures of the night? Monstrous things of darkness, and beings of pure evil, do they suddenly leap out of black shadows at you? Or are these just myths, old stories told to children? Do we just correctly lump all such things into the category of scary stories,
tales just to be enjoyed around a campfire to give us all a good thrill?
Not always, we think. Sometimes, it just may be that monsters really do lurk out there in the darkness, hide in the night, waiting to pounce on us. Moreover, they may be truly evil. Or worse, maybe they just don’t care one way or the other if we exist or not.
Perhaps, it’s rather like a human stepping on an anthill. No malice might be involved, but the results for the ants are still terrible. So yes, things that go bump in the night aren’t always just in our imagination. Sometimes, they really are there.
This may just be the case with the mysterious and enigmatic Mothman. This monster has been with us for just about half a century now. Not only does the macabre legend of the Mothman seem to refuse to die, but if anything, it continues to grow. Of late, it has been spreading rapidly. Starting in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, it didn’t end there.
Sightings of the Mothman have increased until they are now seen around the world and in the most diverse places. They are even in regions that one would logically think had never even heard of the Point Pleasant Mothman, because they are that isolated, that remote in some instances.
But just what is the Mothman? Does it really exist? Does it, as some say, come as a harbinger of doom? Can the creature really prophesize such dread things as are proposed in the book and the subsequent movie, The Mothman Prophecies? Or is it just trying to warn us of coming disasters to help us?
Some claim the creature is connected to the UFO phenomenon. Others declare the thing is of paranormal origin, supernatural, or perhaps even interdimensional. Still others claim it is of this Earth, but a type of being we rarely encounter, for it only exists half in and half out of the world as we know it.
Alternatively, is this all just a form of mass hysteria? Many argue that it is. They say that periodically, relatively isolated people, such as those in West Virginia, will have these sorts of rumors ignite and gain credence, and finally be regarded as something real, although they are false.
Others insist it is real, especially those witnesses, who not only claim to have seen the creature, but saw it close up and over a prolonged period. They maintain the thing exists.
There are those who claim it may be real, but it is just a mistaken creature, something else that is rarely seen, but quite normal. They say the Mothman may be nothing more than, say, a large barn owl.
As we can readily see, there is no shortage of explanations and variations of them for the Mothman phenomenon. There are numerous ones. They seem to come in all sorts of variations. Everyone, it seems, has an opinion.
So exactly where does the truth lie? Well, we will be honest here. At first, we thought the Mothman mystery was just the product of fevered imaginations. We argued that people, who because they were going through extremely tough times economically, had responded by becoming emotionally overwrought. Because of that state, they were seeing things that just weren’t there. Or perhaps because of that same emotional state and the circumstances under which they saw the sightings, they simply misinterpreted what they were seeing.
Then others, as sometimes happens with such events, started seeing and misinterpreting what they saw, as well, now that they were conditioned, predisposed to seeing such things, too. This sort of thing does happen. It has happened throughout history.
However, despite what we originally believed, and so as skeptics dismissed the whole subject out of hand, the Mothman issue kept raising its ugly head, literally. You see, the creature is considered quite horrendous, even nightmarish in appearance. Being investigators, we became gradually more curious and started to delve into the subject. This book is the result.
In this book, we have contrived to bring you a succinct overview of the Mothman in its totality. We have endeavored to supply you with all the pertinent facts, supporting evidence, accounts of eyewitnesses, and provide whatever other evidence we could find.
We also attempt to solve certain aspects of the Mothman phenomenon, provide answers. To do this, we investigated the whole subject to the best of our abilities, as in depth as possible.
The results of that investigation surprised even us. In this book, Mysteries of Mothman, we wish to relate to you
