Dedication
To all my friends and family that believe in me. Thank you!
And to my very own Michael, I love you always, even when you growl and nip.
Chapter 1
The sound of chalk moving in rhythmic swishes against the black board paused long enough for the teacher to speak aloud.
Class, today, we’re discussing the myth behind,
he waited for the outbreak of giggles and ignored the choked coughs laced with surprise and finished writing the last letter of the word with a steady hand and said, werewolves
.
Tapping the white chalk stick against the board to end the sentence with a period, Michael shifted sideways before looking over one shoulder to grace the class with a look of disdain.
The mixed laughter died instantly at his probing, disapproval teacher squint from behind thin, rectangular lenses.
Folding his arms across his chest, Michael surveyed his students. The classic age-old method of silence worked magic on the thirty four teenagers in his 11th grade history class.
Nose twitching, Michael lifted one dark eyebrow in question as he glanced from face to face. Apprehension laced with a high influx of hormones tickling his senses. Similar to irritating, perfume, mushroom clouds around make-up counters in shopping malls— which he avoided at all costs due to sneezing fits— he managed to fight back the urge to sneeze before speaking.
"What’s funny about my topic, boys and girls?"
Michael rotated his jaw once. His usual rock hard composure a sign to the children― he was not amused. Even though he found their reactions hilarious, he always stayed one step ahead of the game. Never giving an inch, and he absolutely, by no means, permitted the control to shift in their favor.
Standing at the front of the class with his back taunt, knees locked, he allowed a pinch of annoyance to show as he waved his arms at the students. Well, spit it out!
Nobody answered, typical.
The sound of shifting feet and shuffling paper met his sensitive ears as he took note of the guilty faces before turning back to the chalkboard again.
Now I know it’s a weird topic for an old teacher like me to suggest, but it is Friday, so humor me.
Placing the piece of chalk on the tray underneath the board, he immediately dusted his hands together to remove the white residue from his skin.
Swiveling around to face the students again, he waited for the usual commotion brought on by weekend breaks.
Mr. Lycon?
He zeroed in on the young girl seated in the last row of desks at the back of the classroom.
Yes, Ma— Maggie…
Michael answered before tilting his head back and sneezed. His hands reached his nose and mouth just in time to capture the sneeze.
Perfect. Just. Perfect. Why do I have to be the one werewolf in the world with allergies?
Grabbing a tissue off his desk, Michael blew his sinuses clear, apologized to the class, and quietly observed his favorite student among the girls.
It wasn’t unusual for teachers to have their favorites, but his reasons were completely different.
He saw things nobody else could see.
Well.
Not human anyway.
A flickering yellow light inside a twirling funnel within her mind told him all he needed to know of her potential.
Her magic.
The only other significant source of power that attracted his senses― her cerebrum. A photographic memory, like a sponge soaking up every lesson he taught like water from a bowl.
With manners consistent of strict but loving parents, he approved of her social skills and behavior― in school and out. Maggie conducted herself in a mature, outgoing, friendly way. Add the fact that she
