Chapter 1: Adam and the Wolf
Stand aside!
Adam roared, shoving his way through the crowd of snickering children that had gathered around one of the tables during their lunch hour. Their derisive laughter burned his ears and caused his jaw to clench tight; his thick, strong teeth threatening to crack under the immense pressure. He already knew what the cruel masses were laughing at and absolutely would not abide it.
As he continued to force his way towards the center of the ruckus, the children began to scatter in fear. A hissed warning shot its way through the crowd, causing the mocking laughter to be replaced by the sounds of scurrying feet. By the time Adam had reached the center of the commotion, the crowd had dispersed. The children who were just taunting and mocking were now either staring pointedly at the back wall, which had become quite interesting it seemed, or trying to eat their meals with false casualness as if they had taken no part in the cruelty.
Adam! It is so very nice to see you!
The lone child sitting at the center of the commotion stated in an excited, yet somehow robotic fashion.
The smallish boy was covered from head to toe in the slimy spinach that was being served for lunch today. Undoubtedly the work of the other wicked children, Adam thought to himself, trying to hide his fury in the presence of the lad.
Utterly unfazed by the filth in which he was sitting, Liam Bingsby, Adam's younger brother, continued smiling happily towards him. In his hands he was gingerly cradling a small pile of slimy earthworms.
What are you doing, Liam?
Adam asked politely, pushing his anger aside and smiling at his baby brother.
The rest of the lunch room remained deadly silent in a combination of fear and curiosity. Liam slowly looked down into his hands at his slimy charges then back towards his brother.
I am protecting these lives.
The child stated plainly, and then proceeded to extend his palms towards his brother so that the earthworms were even more visible. He gave them the gentlest of shakes to further emphasize his point.
What do you mean?
Adam asked, his curiosity almost fully replacing the surging anger he was feeling. The rest of the children began to murmur to each other as the lunch room resumed its activities with some normalcy. The threat of Adam's retribution slowly faded from the other children's minds.
It was very hot outside today, and I did not want them to burn and shrivel and die. Because of this I thought that they should be inside for a while.
Liam spoke with a strange combination that could best be described as monosyllabic excitement.
Adam was quite used to the quirky mannerisms of his little brother. He only wished that the rest of these foul Towny children showed some compassion towards Liam.
That's a very nice thing to do, buddy. Now, let's go get you cleaned up.
Adam said warmly, extending a hand towards his brother.
What if the other children want their lunches back?
Liam asked, without the slightest hint of sarcasm in his voice, while looking towards the clumps of food that were sticking to his clothing and flesh.
Adam glared around the room in disgust before replying curtly, They won't.
Liam shrugged happily as he stood up from the table where he sat alone, worms still in hand.
As Adam escorted little Liam to the washroom, none of the children dared to make a snide remark. Adam was in his final year at the academy, and stood nearly a foot taller than the tallest of the teachers. He had a fiery temper, and on more than one occasion he had sent other children to the hospital. The rest of the students walked on eggshells in his presence. He even had special permission to have facial hair, as when he shaved his face, the hair always grew back thick and rough before the school day ended anyhow. He had coarse black hair, which fell in matted heaps to his shoulders, and dark brown eyes flecked with gold. Every slight movement Adam made caused his
