Chapter One
Sophia plonked down on the couch with her eyes glued to the pages of a mystery novel in her hand. Suddenly, she let out a long sigh and shut the book in front of her. Her mom noticed from the kitchen and asked, What’s wrong, honey?
Nothing. I’m just bored,
Sophia replied in a dazed voice, lying upside down on the couch.

her mom suggested. Sherrie, her dog, yapped happily in reply, wagging her tail.
Fine. Come on, Sherrie. Let’s go for a walk,
Sophia said to Sherrie, grabbing her backpack.
Sherrie yapped and trotted happily out the door, Sophia right behind her tail.
Okay, let’s go to the policeman’s house and see if we can hear someone complain about a crime,
Sophia whispered. Sherrie simply wagged her tail.
Sherrie quietly trotted up to the policeman’s house. Sophia crouched low, cupped her ear, and pressed it against the door. Having seen through the window that a plump woman was talking to the serious-looking policeman, she became naturally curious and tried to hear any tidbits of the conversation. Mission accomplished.
"So what happened was that my neighbor, Mr. Todd, was
