    Fate

    -1-

He started to breathe heavily as his lungs began burning. He didn’t know how long he had been running, but he was determined to catch up with the 2005 blue Sedan that had been towing the U-Haul filled with furniture and boxes.

However, he lost track of the vehicle after it took an immediate left turn and disappeared. But, he refused to stop running after it. He refused to believe that the love of his life was gone forever.

    BRIIIINNNNGGGG!

Roman Stone opened his eyes at the familiar sound of his alarm clock, glancing over to see that it read seven o’ clock. He stared back up at the plain ceiling in his bedroom and sighed, rubbing his eyes.

As much as he didn’t want to, he had to get up and start his normal routine. He would take a shower, brush his teeth, get dressed, grab an apple, and head outside. He would go to Bloomfield High School where he started as a senior. After school, he would come home and do his homework before dinner and then go to bed.

He was getting pretty tired of the routine, but he had nothing else to live for. There was no other reason for him to get dressed nicely or even try to look good.

Ever since he lost her, life had no meaning.

Roman! You can’t stay in bed all day! exclaimed his mother, echoing from the kitchen downstairs.

Roman sighed again and got up from bed, grabbing a towel before locking the bathroom door in the hall behind him.

    -2-

Look who finally rolled out of bed, commented Mrs. Stone. She smirked at her son as he came down the stairs dressed in a pair of dark jeans and a plain white shirt. She began packing his lunch.

Roman gave her a small smile. It had always been just the two of them since his father passed away a few years ago from a fatal heart attack at the tender age of forty-five. He used to have a shoulder to lean on when he held back emotions from the memories, but now he was left to lean against a pole.

He swung his backpack over his shoulder and adjusted the straps. Well, I guess I’ll go.

You’ve got to eat something more than an apple, she said. She watched as he ignored his packed lunch and ignored her comment, grabbing the shiny fruit from the basket.

I don’t have time. I have to leave or I’ll be late.

Mrs. Stone watched her son leave through the back door and sighed. She wasn’t blind to the change in him. She knew what had made him more somber each day. Ever since she left, the sparkle in his blue eyes had disappeared. Now, they left a dull atmosphere throughout his vision.

    -3-

When Roman entered the school grounds, he was met with familiar faces that he had seen since the start of elementary school. These were people he had grown up with, who he had learned all the life lessons with. Most everybody understood who he was, but he knew that they totally lost that sense this past summer. Since she had left, he had lost all the muscle he had gained while playing sports. His hair had grown longer, nearly covering his eyes. His sense of style was lacking with any originality. He just wasn’t the same person.

    Roman!

A blonde haired boy came running down the cement steps toward his best friend since preschool. He had a smile on his face which he had every morning. He always hoped that his smile would cheer up his friend, but he knew it was futile.

Hey, Brad. Roman gave a slight nod to his friend, adjusting the straps on his shoulders. He looked up at the school. The first day of senior year, huh?

That’s right, man! This is the last first day that we can really start thinking about our future. What college we’re going to attend, what degree we want, who we want to spend our life with.

Brad paused when he saw the downcast look on Roman’s face. Sorry.

"About what? As far as I’m concerned, I have no future. I don’t know what I want to be and I don’t know who I want to be." Roman shook his head as he headed inside the school with Brad in tow.

    -4-

How can you say that you have no future? I mean, you have many opportunities in different fields, argued Brad.

Like what? asked Roman, dodging past people who gave him questionable and concerned looks.

    Basketball. You’re the star, man.

He shook his head as he stopped at his locker, looking at him. Not anymore. Brad, there is nothing for me. He dropped his voice to a whisper. You know why.

She has nothing to do with this! exclaimed Brad.

He glared at Brad angrily. "She has everything to do with my future. She was the one for me. Do you even remember how torn up I was when she left like that?"

"Was? Brad gave him a deep chuckle that lacked humor. Roman, you’ve been torn up about it for three months already."

    I have not, he denied.

You can deny it all you want, but everybody around you notices your change in attitude since she left. Hell, you won’t even say her name anymore.

Roman shook his head. I don’t need this from you. You’re supposed to be my best friend.

With his final word said, Roman retreated around the corner and away from Brad.

    -5-

He suddenly bumped into another person while turning the corner. Books went flying as the two of them fell to the ground.

Roman shook his head, exasperated. He began picking up the other persons’ books. I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking.

    No, it was my fault.

He stopped short of grabbing the purple binder before his heart went silent. He had heard that voice before. He had heard it so many times throughout his life. But, it couldn’t be. He was cautious to look up, afraid that his revelation would be another memory of his heart.

Are you okay? The voice was concerned, yet unsure of why he wasn’t returning her things.

Roman exhaled and looked up through the hood of his eyes. He
