I’m a self-published author with one title to my name so far. I have other works in various stages, a mystery that I will publish in August, and one I hope to have ready to publish this fall. I have no printed books as yet. I am middle-aged, fat with weird hair. I have accepted that I can’t do anything about the middle-aged part, but I am working on the fat and the weird hair. Like the majority of my writing, I am a work in progress.

    Prolog

It seemed as though he’d been waiting for days, although it could only have been a few hours. He would bathe again when his task was complete. She’d be here soon. She always came through this alley on her way back to her nest. She was so predictable. They were all so predictable. She was lovely. They were all lovely. She was vermin. They were all vermin. It was up to him to keep the vile vermin from infesting the innocent ones who went about their lives completely unaware of the evil in their midst. He would save them. He was their chosen savior. The Goddess had chosen him to do her work and eliminate the vile creatures that walked amongst them. She was coming, now. He could see her shadow precede her into the alley.

He watched her as she made her way, daintily, though the muddy obstacle course of puddles. He looked up at the clearing sky. At least it had stopped raining. He hated wet fur. He’d bathed the excess water off while he was waiting for her. She always came this way. He studied her as she slowly approached. She was beautiful cream and marmalade on the outside. Inside, he knew, it was a different story. Inside, she was ugly, a vile, faithless creature. It was his duty to destroy the evil festering inside her. The Goddess demanded it and he was a devoted servant to the Goddess. It was a difficult life, this holy work. It was lonely work. The Goddess had told him that he could not reveal his mission, until the time was right. He sometimes wondered when the time would be right. He craved the approval of the Goddess and his fellow cats needed to know about the evil that walked with them. The Goddess assured him that other felines would revere him for his work and devotion to her. It made him even prouder to know that she trusted him with such an important mission.

He watched as the vile multicolored cat approached the alley where he waited, sheltered in the shadows. Look at her, walking along so seductively. It was all he could do to look upon the faithless, vile creature. The Goddess urged him to action, but he hated the taste of the evil one’s fur. It made him feel ill to have it in his mouth. He had to work himself up to the task the Goddess had set for him. He was pleased that it was getting easier with each new task.

Do it, the Goddess urged. You know what you have to do. Do it. Yes, he knew what he had to do. He was pleased and proud that the Goddess had chosen to honor him with the task to cleanse the world of these vile creatures. He took a deep breath and stepped out into the light.

Callie! he called. She turned and smiled. The vileness inside her didn’t suspect a thing. He approached her.

Hi, she said. Her eyes were large and green. You couldn’t see the evil behind them. What are you doing here?

    Chapter 1

Princess gave his chest another once over before entering the FCIS office. If he were lucky, the Boss would not notice that he was late again. He was in luck, only Mittens was in the office, working diligently at his computer. Princess relaxed slightly. He was in the clear. He headed for his own workstation.

Morning, Probie, he said cheerily. You would not believe the traffic on Main Street, this morning. I nearly got run over three times just crossing the north bound lanes. Where's Boss?

Behind you, Mittens replied. Princess froze for a fraction of a second before turning. Crusher stood there, his sleek fur shining in the light.

Morning, Boss, he said. Crusher ignored him. What did that mean? Was there still a spot of cat food on his nose? He was sure that he’d gotten all of it off. He resisted the urge to clean his face again. It was clean. He distinctly remembered cleaning it.

Gear up, Crusher said, grimly. We have another one.

That's number three, Sassy suddenly appeared. Princess wondered idly where the svelte Siamese had been when he'd entered. He hurried to catch up with Crusher who was already disappearing out the door.

She was beautiful, Princess studied the beautiful albeit bloody body of the calico cat lying in the mud.

Her name was Callie, said Sassy. This is Momcat, Sassy introduced the golden-eyed brown tiger cat. She looked distressed to Princess and no wonder. A crime scene was no place for kittens and Momcat seemed to have four. Princess looked closer they were all girls. They looked alike, tabbies like their mother. They even smelled the same. How did she tell them apart? Princess gave himself a mental shake and brought his attention back to Momcat’s story.

There’s a bakery right on the corner, she was saying. "The birds gather around back, because humans always produce more than they can use in a day and toss out the older stuff. The birds love it, so this is a perfect place to practice stalking birds. And getting them, Princess thought. His stomach rumbled at
