While the thought of writing a novel has always been in my mind it was not until I retired to Florida that the thoughts became a reality. I am a retired dentist, living in Florida for many years now, I have always been interested in what it must be like to write a novel, and as I thought, it is simply great. My urge to write was probably in the blood as my father wrote a beautiful book before he retired too, it was well received by the press and readers of crime stories also. The effort of writing a book and getting ready for publication is very time consuming and arduous, more than the average reader of your book can imagine.

A man does contact him, saying he knows who killed her but when Jake is to meet him he finds the man brutally killed. The local police Lieutenant with Jake team up in an attempt to find out who is running a large drug operation from the Cape to Mexico and they are ruthless. Jake solves the drug operation however it leads to the Mafia in Boston who put a contract out on Jake...

    Chapter One

The wind and rain roared and pelted him as he stood very wet, very cold and shivering out on the marina dock in Chatham Massachusetts. The temperature hovers around 45 degrees, Jake Fuller 55 years old a retired NYPD officer, has been living in the sunny state of Nevada since his retirement, and he is finding this weather to be unsuitable for man or beast. He is beginning to wonder at this time of the night what the devil is he doing on Cape Cod, in the middle of October in a driving rain storm.

He pulls his windbreaker tighter around himself and he begins to feel like a damn fool. It is now almost ten in the evening. Jack at this point decides to go back to the Inn, the Chatham Inn, where he has just checked in for the night. He heads up the walkway to the large wrap around porch where relief from the rain is found. Jake made a mental note to thank the builders of the Inn for this hidden but wonderful design of the Inn. They knew all too well the perils of the Nor'easter these hardy people of New England had to endure. He has been standing there on the marina docks, for over one hour now and frankly his temper is getting the best of him, he looked at his Timex watch for the fifth time and decided that it was time to go in to the hotel, where he will find some warmth and have the ability to get a good strong Irish whiskey, he wondered if these old Cape Codders' carried a Bushmill whiskey. Well, he shivers against the cold and rain and decides that yes it is time and goes into the Chatham Inn standing so grand looking, in this dreary weather. He turns immediately into the comfort of that huge covered porch to the Inn and some warmth. God Almighty he thinks to himself what makes this such a good vacation destination?

Jake has arrived in the middle of this storm, in the middle of October, after a very difficult travel having to change planes in Atlanta, the plane he was supposed to take to Boston, was delayed two hours, finally he arrived into Boston only to find out once again the little commuter planes that fly to Cape Cod were all grounded because of the Nor'easter, and so he hopped over to the Plymouth Bus Lines. it took almost four hours with the storm to get to Chatham. He arrived in the middle of this horrible storm and no sooner had he arrived, he received a phone call, telling him to meet on the marina wharf at 9:00 PM tonight and then hung up. Jake held the phone and wondered if this guy is really an informer or a hoax. At this point Jake thinks the phone call was probably a hoax, but you never know and that is why he was soaking wet tonight standing on a dock on Cape Cod. He lunged at the huge wooden doors, they probably are original he thought, as he pushed hard against the wind and the huge doors to enter the Inn. Oh he felt as if he entered another world the lobby area was superb. Here he entered the ornate proud decor of eighteen century furnishings, from the expensive sofas and side chairs depicting another by-gone era, Jake looked around the large area, barren of course from any living soul at this time of night, the Inn radiates in this weather the warmth of it all, This is what the Chatham Inn is all about, the people love it Jake nods at these thoughts but he has only one thing on his mind and that is to find the Chatham bar, with that famous Irish bartender Patrick Kennedy. Jake hurried through the lobby and went straight to the bar and ordered a Bushmills straight up, and Pat being a good Irishman, knowing an Irish drink poured a good one and gave him an Irish greeting, though Jake was not Irish but sure did enjoy their whiskey.

After the second one Jake thanked him and left for the safety and warmth of his room, he waved to the desk clerk as he walked through the lobby toward the stairs leading to his room on the third floor. Jake mentally said to himself these Cape Codders sure want to keep the old traditions for themselves and for the tourists, there was no elevators for the third floor guests, however the walk did him good, soaking wet and he was eager to get out of the clothes and into his warm bed. Jake felt he has gone through a time tunnel back to when time was supposedly easier and more gentle. Little did Jake know how wrong he was and he would need the full use of twenty-first century science and technology to help him in this search for the killer or killers of his wife Terry. He got to his room where he tore off this clothes and went into the shower and it was heaven with the warm water pouring down on him warming him he stood in for over an hour.

He found the large white bathrobe the Inn provides for all its guests, wrapped himself in it and turned on the TV for the evening news. He listened to some local news program, got bored at that and decided he has had a long day with all the travel and he went to bed and sleep.

Jake Fuller is a person who one could describe only as a man's man. He is not tall, in fact he is probably five feet ten inches tall he is very well built, the years of weight lifting and using the gym facilities the police department provide to the police, both old and young, have helped him now that he is retired, and of course he does not have the facilities open to him now that is living in Las Vegas. What happened to Jake when he retired to Vegas is almost unbelievable. He was celebrating something or another, when he met this young woman, Terry Fisher, and in a drunken state of mind they wound up married, but that is not the end of it at all. What follows is nothing but disaster for Jake and his new bride, and her hidden past becomes a very large liability to her and to Jake, she is murdered.

Jake is hell bent on finding out who are the killers. His days of detective work with the NYPD pays off for him, and talking to the police commander there has shown that there is a very large drug cartel working in Vegas, via Cape Cod, Terry became embroiled in it and was murdered because of a problem she had in Mexico on one of her trips. The fact that he is in New England shows that he is determined to follow up on all leads the Sheriff gives him, and he said to Jake remember follow the money do not let go of a case until you feel you have closed all the loose ends to it.

    Chapter Two

As so often happens when one is tired at the end of his or her day, the phone rings and you are awakened to that dreadful sound that shatters a beautiful sleep. It happened to Jake around 8:00 AM and in his sleep deprived state he answered growling yeah what do you want at this hour of the day, followed by who is this? The voice on the other side answered quietly and tried to hide or mask the voice, but Jake was aware this was the same person who called him in Vegas to give him the answers to the death of Terry, was here in this New England town. Who is it Jake answered trying to have a more decent tone to his already tired voice and irritated to the point that the person on the other end started to apologize for calling so early. Jake stopped that right away, for Jake was a no nonsense guy and knew when he was wrong and said it right away, stop apologizing why are you calling me now, where were you last night? The small hidden voice said he was sorry but he could not get away to meet him, however he does have information for him, the Sheriff from Vegas indicated that Jake will want to hear about it.

The next sentence mentioned vaguely, but in a manner that Jake knew all too well, how much is the information worth to him? Jake knew all to well these snitches, the cops work with a number of them year round, and they are on the unofficial payroll of each cop. Jake was no exception. Except in this case he did not know who it was and before any transaction is made by Jake he has to meet with them and find out what the deal is about.

That was when Jake became more insistent and his voice became more commanding saying to the mystery voice, listen you called me now let us set up a time and place, be there this time or I cannot waste anymore of my time, I do not know you and if this keeps up, without anything for me I will not see you. Now what is it that I might want to know?

What he heard next sent a chill throughout his body, and trying not to appear anxious about it, he said what did you say? The voice on the phone said listen I do not want to talk about this anymore, meet me at the pier tonight and you will get all your answers, with that Jake hears the click from the other end signalling the call was over. He slumped over in his bed, reflecting on what he has just heard, and decided then to call his old friend in Vegas to see if he knew anything about this person since he indicated that the Sheriff was known to him. Jake sat back in his bed and looked at what time it was now, the clock indicated it was now 9:30AM so Jake got up from his bed and went to the shower and then got dressed, casually to see if the breakfast room was as nice as the hotel seemed to be.

After checking his appearance in the floor length mirror, Jake picked up the daily newspaper and went downstairs, down the long sweeping circular stairs to the first floor. The builders of this Inn must have been quite wealthy he remarked to himself looking around at all the exquisite paneling in the lobby, running right into the bar, he walked past the bar and into the small bright breakfast room. Here there was a big difference from the heavy dark stained wood outside of this room, it was evident to him the new owners since there probably were more than two or three of them since the Inn was first opened, the present ones have embarked on the colorful touch and modern look to the Inn. It certainly is a very nice touch.

He sat himself over by the large picture windows so he will be able to see the entire view of Chatham Bay, and being single he was the only one at that large circular table. In a moment a very pretty young woman approached and asked very politely was he expecting anyone for breakfast. She was holding a few menus in her hand as she gently placed one of them in front of him, smiling and waited for him to answer.

No he smiled at her and said I am here by myself and do not know anyone here on the Cape, and to sit at a table with only one other chair seems to be too lonely, that is why I picked the large table not only to see the beautiful scenery, but perhaps meet someone who might be interesting. Unfortunately, that was not going to be his choice, staying at this large table was for parties of five or more, and unless you have more people joining you, I am afraid you must move to a smaller table she repeated. Jake apologized to her and picked up his drink, a Bloody Mary, and went to the table that she picked out for him.

The waitress followed him and basically told him what to order, since he was really new to the area, she told him to try the New England Breakfast you can not go wrong with that she cheerfully said. He did so and it in fact was very pleasant and told her so, all the while Jake is still sitting in this beautiful dining room alone. On the way out, after paying his check, not to be nosy, he said to the girl, what happened to everyone, no one here in the hotel, or don't they ever eat? He said this in a joking way, but she did not like the way he said it and replied, it must be the weather or everyone is afraid of what might happen.

That perked up Jake's detective antenna and he asked what do you mean afraid of what might happen? Oh nothing she said I am sorry. I'm having a bad day.

On another day or in another place Jake probably would not have not taken any notice of that remark, but here he was in his search state of mind as his wife used to remind him. Nothing else mattered to him, oblivious to everything about him until his search found what he was looking for. His wife certainly knew him having been with him for nearly thirty years, and then in an instant a heart attack, and she was gone. Jake slowly recovered and decided to move away from memories and chose Las Vegas.

His mother, God rest her, she always told him that no matter how life hit you with problems and trials, you never were hit with ones that God felt you could not handle. He remembered that bit of advice his whole life He went up to the check out counter to pay his bill and have a bit of conversation with someone, about Cape Cod, perhaps he can pick up one of the many pamphlets he noticed on the stand when he came into the dining room, you know the usual ones advertising all there is to see on Cape Cod. One thing he was sure of in the season this place must be really the nicest Inn around, Jake was beginning to become enamored of this place.

    Chapter Three

Where he was last evening beckoned and that is exactly where he decided to go to look, it was about one quarter of a mile from were he was now so he ambled over towards the wharf. There were still a few yachts lying in the marina some huge and they were majestic looking. Though Jake never was one to want a boat now that he has a good pension and all that money from Las Vegas and the prize money he probably could afford one of the smaller ones, but why, he doesn't even like to go fishing! He walked onto the marina and there sure were some great looking yachts, they were at least, the larger ones going to leave this marina and head south so the owners in the winter months could enjoy them, such is the life of
