About this ebook
Thirty years, six women, one question.
Dreams, ambitions, pleasures, plans and fears.
For Diane, Nancy and friends, leaving Edinburgh University in the mid 1970s, such attachments initially serve them well. Heading out to England, Ireland, Wales, America and the Middle East, their very different lives intertwine and paths cross. But as 40 looms, the going gets tougher. The old attachments tighten their grip and their lives start to rock and unravel - with devastating consequences for some of the group. Eventually each woman is forced to confront her own reality; some with insight, others not. Is there a different and better road ahead? Is there still time to rescue their lives?
Eight of Cups is a genuine page-turning novel; an entertaining yet bittersweet story that asks serious questions about the potential for attachments to smash our hopes of becoming all we can be.
Mirren Jones
MIRREN JONES is the pseudonym for the creative writing partnership of Marion Duffy and Elaine Atkins. MIRREN represents Marion, being the Scottish version of her name, and JONES represents Elaine - a true Welsh girl. Together they have written two works of non-fiction (see Duffy & Griffin, Radcliffe Medical Press) and a debut novel, Eight of Cups (EM People). Born in Dundee, Scotland, MARION believes in fate, which maybe just as well given the interesting twists and turns of her life so far. Her working life has been rich and varied, from teaching in Jeddah, to lecturing at The University of Dundee, to facilitating medical practice development. Having taken early retirement from her practice manager post some years ago, she was seduced back recently to help out and enjoy a regular supply of cakes. In her spare time, she finds the creative writing process a joy, sitting at her window in beautiful Strathmore. Marion has only recently discovered that she is a true introvert! She loves walking, reading, yoga, karate, travelling and one-to-one chats with friends. Born at the foot of a mountain in Glamorgan, Wales, ELAINE spent far too much time acquiring various degrees before following a path through research, teaching and consultancy, finally ending up as a senior manager in the National Health Service, only to be derailed by a serious illness which necessitated an early retirement. Perversely this has been something of a blessing, enabling a spreading of wings from writing and publishing non-fiction works to the wonderful world of creative fiction. Her children believe that their mother's transformation from Executive to Novelist confirms her eccentricity, although recently she's been lured back into world of business by www.CareandCompare.com, of which she is Communications Director. When not working, Elaine is likely to be found with her horses or dogs. She also enjoys gardening, cooking and walking. Via long distance communication, the two girls are working on their second novel, Never Do Harm. Their informative website can be found at www.mirrenjones.co.uk
