On January 9, 1997, Comair flight 3272 departed the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport in very wintry conditions. Stuck in a holding pattern outside the Detroit airport, the plane crashed in the icy conditions. All 29 people aboard, which included three crew members, were killed.

Joy LaPlante was born in Toledo Ohio, but she has lived in Michigan all her life. Currently residing in Petersburg, MI, Joy has been married to her husband Bud for 20 years. They have three children and six step children. Joy started a little company called USA Graphics LLC in 2006 with her children. The company is licensed by the United States Marine Corps and makes custom shirts for families to wear to special events such as the Boot Camp Graduation from MCRD Parris Island and MCRD San Diego.
