That night Sam hadn’t a worry on his mind. His stomach was full from mother’s spaghetti and the only thing he wanted was sleep. He never even thought about his little brother Russell in the next room. Russell was the farthest thing from his mind. At dinner his brother kept annoying him about this nightmare he kept having every night.

Every night he says he is coming for me! Russell said.

It’s just a nightmare! Sam said bitterly.

He told me you were next.

Sam proceeded to hit his brother and wished the monster would eat him when he was given a good verbal thrashing from his parents. He never really liked his brother all that much. Every time Russell would get in trouble it always became Sam’s responsibility. Russell was always finding ways to get in trouble. Once he smashed the fish tank in the living room with a bowling ball. Sam was upstairs playing video games when his mother started screaming at him to come downstairs. He saw his brother’s mess and yet his mother screamed at him to watch his brother better. He would get mad because he didn’t understand this. All his mother would do was hide in her room. Once she left the door open and Sam saw her hiding in the corner of the bedroom holding a tiny mirror covered in sugar. Sam was confused but she seemed to be playing with it. He told his dad about it and got another verbal thrashing about spying on his mother.

Once Sam hit the pillow he fell into a nice sleep, dreamless and peaceful. When Sam awoke he noticed something different. His dark room had a glow creeping up from the floor. Sam pulled back the covers from his face and sat up. Across the room facing the end of the bed was his bathroom door. His bedroom was connected to his little brother’s room through a conjoining bathroom. The door to the bathroom was almost completely shut except for a little crack. The light was coming from the bathroom. Sam had remembered turning the light off before he went to bed. Was his little brother in there?

    Russell? Sam called.

A faint whimper answered. The sound was faint and slithered through the cracks of the door into Sam’s ears. A cold chill slid down his spine making him panic a bit. Sam has never experienced this kind of chill before in his ten years of life.

Russell? Are you ok? Sam called again.

Faintly the door began to open. Very slowly, the door spilled in a blanket of light. The light splashed across Sam’s room reaching his bed and spilling across his face. For a split second he couldn’t see what he was staring at. His eyes needed a moment to adjust from the darkness. After his eyes adjusted is when he saw his brother crumpled to the bathroom floor. A dark figure stood over him and at first Sam thought he saw a dark figure holding large worms dangling down by his brother’s torso. In fact, Sam came to realize they were Russell’s intestines. The dark figure was feeding on them. A trail of blood could be seen coming from Russell’s
