About this ebook
No matter what or whom she turned out to be: devoted mother, commonplace citizen or criminal, Ellie Liles was sure her true essence was traced back to one emotional juncture that turned her life upside down. In the end, when it was all over, she would never quite be the same again.
She had been thirteen years old when it happened; when the demons came. She was mixed up, resentful and angry. So when the scorching summer of 1992 arrived and tensions had reached flash point, she was sent to live with her father on a farm on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. Little did she know that what kept her bitter and stifled, would be tested to their limits. Life would be tough. Simmering resentment amongst the islanders would test fractured relationships. Ancient beliefs would be resurrected. And the lives of all around would one day rely on Ellie to solve the mystery of a murderous beast of the night: Mauthe Doog - the island’s demon dog. The strangest things would happen to her during that long, hot summer.
Nearly twenty years later, when her life had been extinguished much earlier than was due, she finds herself needing someone to delve back - and root her killer out from within her past. Somewhere in the story she is about to reveal, lies the one person who would one day come back to kill her. She has one last die to cast. Within her will, the only thing left of her, is the answer. She has planned things meticulously and chronicled her summer adventure expertly in this one remaining memoir of her past. Her eternal hope is that it serves one last purpose – to locate and enlist the services of the man who can find the answer and lay her demons to rest forever.
Dr Saul Rauf – an old friend with his own troubled past – needs to be pulled out of hiding to an old strange house in a quiet English suburb to read her will. He must learn of his friend’s childhood adventure and decipher its meaning. But how can he find the key within a long and distant past that will unlock his friend’s dying wish? The stakes are high and everything is at risk.
Haunting Demons, is by its title, a complex story of a young child’s inner battle amidst the unfolding of a tumultuous adventure. Folklore, legend and adventure combine elegantly in a story of growing pains, forgiveness and friendship.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I definitely wanted to figure out what was going on so in that sense the story line was compelling. However, this novel would benefit from a good editor and some proofreading. Too often the momentum of the story was stalled by an awkward transition or not enough explanation. And while I like "frame" devices like the one used here (one character "read" the story that comprises the majority of the novel) it requires careful attention to narrator voice - in this case I expected first person narrative and was jarred to realize I was getting an omniscient narrator instead - one who could see sides of the story that the narrator couldn't.
