Chapter One

The black ribbon of highway stretched in front of Nick Spencer’s Mercedes, the silver hood ornament like a compass pointing the way. Home. Who thought he’d ever go back? Not him. He’d had no reason.

Until now.

Despite the air conditioning on full blast, the steering wheel stuck to his moist palms. Nervous? Hell, he hadn’t been nervous in years. Now you have a reason for that, too.

The exit sign loomed in his headlights, and he downshifted into the turn before the annoying GPS could dole out more instructions. He’d grown up here, for Christ’s sake. He knew every street whether he wanted to or not.

Or did he? Driving through town, he couldn’t help but notice how things had changed. Houses freshly painted, more upscale than before. He’d been more than hesitant to book a reservation in a private home and had worried the address would lead to an abandoned, musty Victorian. Steering down the winding driveway, he gave an approving nod at the elegant, modern appearance of the house. Not obnoxiously large, but substantial despite the abundance of windows. As requested, the garage had been left open, so he parked inside and closed the door then strode up the front walk and inside.

Perfect. An airy atmosphere, but cozy. Oh, Madame Evangeline was good—he noted the champagne bucket, dinner keeping warm under silver-lidded serving dishes on a linen-lined cart, and a gas fireplace ready to
