    Chapter 1

    Sarah Sunshine skipped down the garden, she was on a mission. She knew that somewhere at the bottom of the garden there were elves. Maybe they were under the big rhododendron bush, maybe they were hiding in the greenhouse. Wherever they were she was determined to find them. Poppy, the black and white cat followed her. Poppy went everywhere Sarah Sunshine went. She had a sudden worrying thought. 'Do cats eat elves," she wondered. Should I send Poppy back to the house? 'No' she told herself, elves can fly and they are too wily to let themselves be caught by a cat.

    In a cosy little house behind the big bush Henry, the chief elf was in earnest conversation with his 16 children. Henrietta, his wife sat nearby knitting gossamer strands into a jumper. Now listen he said sternly to the eldest of the children . You really must stop annoying the humans, you must stop hiding their things. Elves are meant to be helpful, not go around upsetting people, especially as they don't know what we are. Godfrey, the eldest elf looked shame faced, he blushed guiltily. It was only a bit of fun he said, his whiskers quivering. Well, it's got to stop said his father. Henrietta elf nodded
