    A muffled thunk at the front door made me jump.

    What was that?

    I half-turned to the others working behind me. Did nobody else hear it? Nope, the four guys were oblivious, totally engrossed in their work.

    Half inclined to check the outside monitors in case someone had scaled the electric fence—unlikely but possible, I listened carefully again but heard nothing else.

    Dismissing it, my thoughts dragged me back to the present.

    I’d just got off the phone with Sean. The courtesy call had come as a shock. In the past when Debbie was in some kind of trouble it was always Sean who would call me. A kind of unspoken agreement that rested between us, so I was worried when his name came up on my screen. When he mentioned an ‘accident’ my first thoughts were of Debs and that he was delivering bad news. My heart nearly stopped right at that moment. If some harm came to her I’d be devastated.

    But it hadn’t been Debs. He knew we’d want to know first before others found out.

    It was Mira who was in hospital. Possible broken shoulder or so Sean thought. To early to tell, he said. Some idiot drove straight into her and knocked her right off her bike. And it was no accident. Whoever it was had driven around the block first then straight into her.

    Who would purposely hurt Mira? Who would do that? She was the sweetest girl. Had been since we were five years old. Why harm her?

    My greatest fears were being realised. Something was very wrong. Something bad was happening. I couldn’t shake that feeling that someone was picking us out one by one. It didn’t matter whether you were an elder or us of the new guard of Xipilés. None of us were safe now.

    I’d pinched my eyes closed and ended Sean’s call, but my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Gazing into the fire calmed me but the
