Connie stuck her bare feet out of the rear window, and watched through her toes as the trees blurred past. She was drifting in and out of sleep on the back seat, her head propped up on a zipped up bag full of bikinis and cutoff shorts. She’d been on the road with her parents for 6 hours now, and boredom had come sooner than she’d expected. She rolled her head and looked at her mom sitting in the front passenger seat, nose in a book, while her dad concentrated on the curving mountain roads. She could think of a million other places she’d rather be right now. A million other things she’d rather be doing. But her parents had insisted that she come along on this summer outing.

They were on their way to a rental lake house that they were to share with old friends. Past neighbors that used to live next door, but had moved away 6 years ago. Her dad kept in touch with his old friend, and they came up with this vacation idea together last year.

Connie had tried her best to exclude herself from the trip, telling her parents that at eighteen years of age she was too old now to be going on vacation with her parents. She even told them that her best friend Susan had graciously invited her to spend the week with her, even though Susan had made no such offer. But Connie was sure she would have if Connie had asked her. Her mother explained to Connie that it was precisely the fact that she’d just turned eighteen that they insisted that she come along. Her mother and father wanted one last vacation together as a family. Connie was growing up, her mother said, and soon she would not want to spend any time with her doting parents.
