Princess Ithera had spent many a day imagining how painfully embarrassing it was going to be when she had to take her place at the Choice Feast and compete with princesses younger and prettier than herself for the attention of Prince Leon N’oR of Yurt.
Prince Leon had princesses such as Sylva D’oH and Tyria H’voR vying for his attention, and most everyone expected him to choose one of them as his betrothed princess. Even Ithera felt sure Sylva or Tyria would win the day, despite the surprising appearance of her own name on the final list of Hend princesses in line for marriage to Yurt’s future king.
Her impeccable lineage, her notable education, her friendly nature, each of those things could be blamed for her unexpected presence on the list.
Ithera had a suspicion, though, that her name wasn’t on the list for any of those reasons.
Ithera had her flaws. Of that she had no doubt. She tended toward irrational optimism, as her investment in silsk proved. She had lost a fortune to a man who promised to triple her money, and then she’d lost her virginity to the son of the armory clerk, which hadn’t been a shining moment in her past considering he turned out to have not one other lover but three. His handsomeness should have warned her but like many others before her she had succumbed to the allure of his trim figure and strong jaw anyway.
Ithera had her strengths, also, and one of those strengths was the ability to look upon things that seemed dire and unfortunate and see opportunity. The silsk debacle had brought her the chance to buy into SuperFine just as a magic worker had discovered a way to make it semi-transparent. Ithera had grown her investment by a factor of one hundred. And with her virginity out of the way, Ithera had no reason not to take a lover until after her marriage, whenever that might be. She had no virginity to save.
If Leon chose her, and that was still an unlikely scenario at best anyway, she would marry him without hesitation, because love often demanded one make sacrifices,
