The first time the writing bug bit my children were small, and I used to write while the kids had their afternoon nap. When they were bigger, I had to stop; I was just too busy. Four and a half years ago, I moved here to the prairies and finally had time to write again. I read on the net that if you write a page a day you can have a novel written in a year. That was doable, so I sat down with pen and paper and six months later I had a short novel finished. I have since graduated to using a laptop and have written three novels and one novella. I write inspirational romance because when I was seventeen, I had stopped going to church and picked up a Grace Livingston Hill Inspirational and came back to a close relationship with God. I decided I would like to give my readers that same experience. Something life changing and positive.

Develop the story and give the characters more depth. Much too simple.

Chapter One

Western Prairies 1896

Pastor Marcus Attwood pulled the heavy draft team to a halt, jumped from the borrowed wagon, and mopped his brow. Whistling Rock of Ages, he tied the team outside the Pine Creek railway station. Pulled from his morning sermon writing, he wasn’t at all happy about his assigned task. He mounted the steps, leaving dust devils swirling behind him.

Inside, Carter Henderson sat hunched over his paper littered desk, his pen in hand, prepared for any incoming messages. Marcus couldn’t understand how the man made sense of the jumble on his desk. He turned away from the disaster area and scanned the posted list of schedules. Good, it was coming in at noon. He sighed, hoping it wouldn’t be late.

The telegraph machine came alive, and so did Carter’s hand. After a moment, he dropped the pen and turned to Marcus, revealing a gapped tooth grin. Hey Pastor, don’t tell me those fellers roped you into greetin’ the mail order brides? You sure are dressed up.

Marcus sighed. They put me in charge of the luggage. Flicking lint from his sleeve, he asked, Is the train on time?

Yes, Sir, should be here shortly. Carter twisted in his seat and glanced at the window, as if the train might appear at that moment. You gonna marry up with one of those girls that’s a comin’? You in yer best suit an all.

Marcus paced to the window. Well, it seems I’ll be marrying all eight of them to the men that sent for them. He grinned. I don’t plan on being one of the grooms though. I’m still young; no one’s caught my eye.

The words stirred a memory. Angry voices, stinging welts from a strap, nights spent on a cold floor, an endless hunger... No, he was in no hurry to take a bride.

Carter’s loud guffaw echoed
