were we to look

exactly

evidence of what

we choose to see

and our eyes believe.

It was while watching

ticks on television;

ticks crawling

on sparsely feathered wrinkled skin;

owlets, a nestful

under a portable battery

of thousand watt floodlights

thirty feet up a Douglas fir;

watching these chicks

was when it came to me.

Defenceless hatchlings -

squirming from

ticks and fleas and lice

but nested soft and safe

in the silent dark.

And then blasted

into bright dazzling nowhere

enveloped and suspended

in white blindness;

extradited for long uncounted seconds

by the unblinking lens

of a black and purring camera;

transported

into a million living rooms.
