    Chapter One: Introduction

    Bread Givers by Anzia Yezierska was first published in 1925. The story of the novel revolves around the growth of a Jewish American girl. Her immigrant parents are originally from Poland. The story presents the complete details of her growing up in that house-hold.

    The story opens with the predicament of a family. The Smolinsky family happens to be on the verge of starvation. Bessie, Mashah, and Fania are the elder daughters in the house. Unfortunately, they are unable to find work.

    Mashah happens to have some money, but she spends that money to make herself look more beautiful.

    Reb Smolinsky, the father of the children, does not work at all. Being a Jewish father, he commandeers his daughters’ earnings. He spends most of his time in reading holy books.

    Mrs. Smolinsky, Reb Smolinsky’s wife, is despaired. Her youngest daughter, Sara, realizes that and she goes out of the house to sell herring. She earns some money to support the family.
