Prologue
Inside Nothing
On the Inside there is only Nothing – an infinity of Nothing. Punctuating the Nothingness are infinite spots of light, like twinkling stars in the night, each connected by tiny threads of Nothing. Quite often, one of the Nothing Lights will blink out, as it is summoned to the Outside, but sometime later the Nothing Light will always return until such a time as it is ready to return to the Outside.
Suddenly, a tear appears in the Nothingness – such a thing has never happened in all the infinite time of Nothing. Piercing, blinding light spills forth from the Outside into the Nothing darkness of the Inside, accompanied by a terrible wail that rends the peaceful silence of Nothingness.
One of the Nothing Lights is sucked against its will and resistance through the tear, and then the tear disappears, and the Inside returns to its infinite state of Nothing – as if nothing had ever happened.

The man’s face was pale and his eyes were dark and bloodshot, as if he had gone without sleep for several nights, if not several weeks. His hair and beard were a tangled briar patch of dark brown mane.
The man stumbled away, retreating
