About this ebook

Here we have five short tales of love: love found, love lost, love of place, love realized and love of a son. Love can be surprising and unexpected as Bonny Woodward discovers when she is mistaken for a shop assistant and eventually finds more than filo pastry in a supermarket. Across the sparks and crackle of a bonfire Clare sees a face she thought she had left behind her. Alex Steadman is both enchanted and disturbed by her new home and then a chance meeting with a tabby cat helps her to settle in. Joanna Grantley suddenly sees her husband in a new light and is pleased. Alex Steadman mourns the loss of her beloved son and is falling into a deep slough of despond, and then a surprising visitor calls.

    Love and Filo Pastry

Bonny Woodward walked slowly along the same aisle again. Worcestershire sauce must be here – I mean, there was ‘O.K.’ and ‘H.P.’ Ah, there! How could she have missed it? She took a step away from her wire trolley to take a bottle from the top shelf.

‘Excuse me, Miss. I’m looking for Filo pastry.’

A pleasant male voice, with a faint northern accent, seemed to be addressing her. Bonny turned her head. Just behind her was a man of maybe thirty, pushing the usual wire shopping trolley. He had dark hair and brown eyes, a very small vestige of a beard. He looked at her expectantly. She took a step back to her trolley, clutching the bottle of sauce.

    ‘Were you addressing me?’

‘Yes. Can you tell me where I can find Filo pastry? I’ve looked where the flour is but …’

He was holding up a piece of paper – a shopping list. He did look a bit lost. But why ask me, she thought. And then it struck her – she was wearing a purple fleece jacket very similar to those provided by the supermarket for their assistants.

She smiled at the man. ‘Well, I don’t actually work here, but it should be in a chill cabinet,
