    Appendix: Scrapbooking Glossary

    Introduction

Do you have hundreds of pictures stuffed in a drawer or placed randomly in a photo album? Events you want to remember forever? Have you already forgotten what the photos were all about? Do you have a new baby and have you thought of making a special keepsake about his or her first years? How about doing a special book for your child’s formative years? For many reasons, people are turning to scrapbooking as a fun and unique project—a way to preserve photos of memories that otherwise fade too soon.

Scrapbooking is much more than pasting photos onto pages of a book. It’s the careful creation of a moment through pictures and designs that cause the observer of the book to linger at each page, marvel at the decorations, and read the funny and poignant stories written by you to commemorate the person on the page or the event depicted by the photo.

Historically speaking, scrapbooking has been around since the 1400s and represented a way to combine prose, quotations, recipes and other things to share with others. These books evolved to become Friendship Albums in the 1500s. People would write in the books in similar ways that people write in student yearbooks today. Scrapbooks remained popular, especially for girls, in the 18th and 19th centuries. When photography became popular, photos became the focus point of these books.

The hobby of scrapbooking fell somewhat out of favor until the 1990s when the internet and craft stores began stocking and advertising scrapbooking products. It has become a hobby enjoyed by many.

Scrapbooking can be done by anyone with the right tools and paper. While there are loads of expensive scrapbooking products out there for you to purchase, you can get by with paper, scissors and tape if you have to. Scrapbooking is a project you can gradually build into—adding special scissors, brad setters, and other really cool tools for you to make the best scrapbook pages ever.

Every scrapbook you make begins with an idea—something you want to have as the focus of your scrapbook. The different scrapbooking themes are numerous but some include the following:

    • The birth and first few years of your baby’s life

    • A wedding, honeymoon and first year of marriage

    • A great vacation

    • One scrapbook for each school year your child attends

    • Your child’s favorite sport or activity

    • Documenting your work on a special hobby

    • A compendium of a couple’s marriage to be given to them on their anniversary

    • Your college years

    • A scrapbook gift to give your spouse on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day

    • Your spouse’s or child’s accomplishments

    • Family gatherings throughout the year

    • A special holiday

    • Your baby’s firsts documented in pictures

There can be many ways you can use scrapbooking. You don’t have to work on one scrapbook at a time. You’re scrapbooking efforts are only limited by the time you have to spend on the hobby and the number of ideas for scrapbooks you have. While you will
