K.C. Corrigan’s books hit all the major best-seller lists. To celebrate this sweet victory, she contacts Todd Marek, the sexy teacher whose writing class she flunked. To her chagrin, he turns her down.
Todd considered K.C. a hot, talented writer -- except she put too much romance in her writing. They disagreed, he failed her and she went on to huge success. Now he wants to distance himself from her. To keep his job, however, Todd has to convince K.C. to sign with the school’s agent. Todd’s not big on groveling.
Now that she’s successful, K.C. has lots of new “friends”. She doesn’t need aggro from the teacher who flunked her -- and who also keeps showing up in her hottest fantasies. Much as she’d love to teach the teacher lessons in romance, Todd’s the slowest of learners -- at first.
Mardi Ballou
By day, she’s a mild-mannered language teacher. But after hours, Mardi Ballou’s wild writer persona erupts and entraps her in bondage...to her computer. Release comes only once she achieves her word count goal, at which point the maniacal chocolate monster will give her one sublime piece. And then she can spend time with her hero husband Lee, who gives great massages at strategic times. So Mardi writes what she knows—romances—hot and mainstream. In addition to independent publishing—Emergency Ex: Teach Him Tonight, Book #2 and Photo Finish: Teach Him Tonight, Book #1 are her first two—she’s written for Ellora’s Cave, Samhain, NCP, Whiskey Creek, and Changeling. Also women’s fiction. Other recent releases are Deja Brew, Dark Venues, and Soap Bloke in e-book format and Perfect Pear in the Ripe and Ready print anthology from Ellora’s Cave, plus the Fangly, My Dear anthology—Byte Marks, What’s a Ghoul to Do?, and Playing with Matches in print from Samhain. About Mardi Ballou
Chapter One
Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. The title leaped out at Todd Marek with the force of a hurled stone. Why was his former student’s book title all over the teacher’s bulletin board?
Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. Ridiculous name. Ridiculous concept. K.C. Corrigan, the author—not at all ridiculous. He’d wanted to get to know her, but they got off to a rocky start. The rockiest. Three years back, they’d clunked heads from her first night in class. She wrote good science fiction, but then she messed up her story with romance. Talented writer with lots of potential, but he’d given her work a failing grade. He’d tried to help her, but she ignored him.
Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. He poured his coffee—too strong, black—just the way he liked it and made a face as the heated caffeine did its job. He needed the jolt after his rush hour commute from job number one—selling electronics—to job number two—teaching at the university extension. Even with two jobs, he barely managed to stay afloat in pricey San Francisco. It might be years before he could live off his own writing. With romance books flooding the marketplace, success continued to elude him.
Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. Caffeinated, he faced the bulletin board. The science fiction romantic comedy by K.C. Corrigan had just topped all the major best-seller lists at once. Great to see this news displayed in the place where her writing had flopped.
Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. Todd couldn’t tear his eyes away. Crap. I don’t believe it. K.C. Corrigan. The first time one of his students hit the best-seller list and it had to be K.C., his biggest challenge—and failure—in five years’ teaching. He fixated on the board the way rubberneckers stare at roadside carnage.
"Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. K.C. Corrigan. She just hit the big time. One of your students, right, Marek?" Roger Griswold came up behind Todd and growled. Griswold was one of the literary agents instructors were supposed to refer promising manuscripts to.
Yeah,
Todd grunted. She’d sparked up his class. Enthusiastic. Easy on the eyes. Very easy on the eyes. Actually hot, something he preferred not to notice about students. Not usually a problem because his classes tended to attract geeky guys—not that Todd believed in stereotypes. There were lots of talented, successful female science fiction writers. Ninety-eight plus percent of the time, those females weren’t part of his student population.
K.C. stood out for many reasons. Good basic writing ability, good understanding of the genre, aside from the romance. Todd was right when he didn’t pass her manuscript along to Griswold. Being denied access to the agent was the equivalent of a failing grade.
Don’t recall her work,
Griswold barked. His pale eyes glittered with menace. Can’t believe I rejected anyone with her talent.
You didn’t. I didn’t refer her,
Todd confirmed.
The agent sprang back as if splattered with permanent ink. You failed to refer her? An author who made the best-seller lists after taking your class?
he hissed.
Todd shrugged with mock nonchalance.
Griswold narrowed his eyes to laser intensity and muttered several expletives that set Todd’s teeth on edge. Not acceptable, Marek. How are you going to fix what you broke?
Todd swiped at the beginning of a headache. What do you mean? What I broke?
His stomach clenched from the bitterness of the coffee and Griswold’s venom.
I’ll spell it out.
He raised pudgy fingers to illustrate his point. "Invasion of Love Slaves from Planet X. You had it in your hands. You were supposed to pass it to me so I could offer representation. He continued to enumerate while pointing at Todd.
A. Friggin’. Best. Seller. Griswold sprayed the last word. Todd retreated, but the agent stepped forward in a dance he wouldn’t let Todd escape.
Considering how much schlock you all foist off on me, the least I deserve from this miserable program is a chance at a top client."
Todd peered at him, then looked at his watch. He did not want to be late to his class. You’ve been around, Griswold. No guarantees. No one knows what’s going to be a top seller.
That’s for damn sure. Even if you found her work weak or you just didn’t like it, you should have let me decide.
I used my best judgment. Always do. I’ve got to go.
Todd headed toward the exit, but the agent blocked his way.
Oh, no. Not until I’ve said my piece. You owe me.
