    Tamara Dragon Warrior

    Chapter One

You are to go to Earth, Tamara. I know you hate humans, but you need to remember, with gifts come responsibilities. Remember Rogan, an angel gifted like you. Nevertheless his gifts help no one. His selfishness has turned him rotten. Don’t let bitterness corrupt you; instead, devote yourself to your duties. You do me proud. Master of All is pleased, and I, High Chairman Yimkakra, God of the Skies, have complete faith in you. Now go to earth. Protect the humans. Maybe one day you will see what makes them worthy of protection.

Tamara opened her eyes, slowly sat up, and looked around. She was in a grassy clearing with nothing but a few scant trees for miles. A puff of green smoke caught her attention. Tartu, you’re awake. She stroked the green baby dragon. Don’t look at me like that; it takes a while to gain consciousness in a semi-mortal body. Tartu’s silver eyes got rounder. Since he didn’t want his master upset, Tamara smiled. He relaxed, curled his body along her upper arm, and in a shimmer of light became a tattoo.

Tamara stared at the tattoo. Anyone who looked would just see a green, scaly dragon. Tartu was small enough to hold in your palm but he could transform into a bigger, stage two dragon. He had hit stage two early because of his skill level. Stage three was adulthood. The last stage was five; those dragons were hundreds of feet tall—their wings were wider than the estates of many royals and nobles combined. The final stage had two disadvantages; the dragon could no longer shift, and the dragon and its rider became permanently linked. If the rider died, so did the dragon. In Riven that wasn’t a problem but on Earth…

Tamara got to her feet and started walking. In human form, she could walk many miles swiftly and without trouble; nevertheless, she needed to keep herself nourished. She would need food soon. As she neared a spring, her face brightened when she noticed blueberry bushes nearby, minutes later she’d eaten them bare but she was seething. I can't believe I went from Riven to this—rummaging in the woods for food.

Tamara was an angel from Riven, the world beyond the skies, the home of gods and angels. The Master of All, who had created everything, lived beyond all worlds in a domain of his own. No one had ever seen his face but many in Riven had heard his voice and instruction.

The souls of mortals went to Rie, a floating paradise beyond the clouds, where food never ran out, there was no anger or pain, and all who entered were transformed into their most beautiful and healthy stage of life. All who entered Rie never wanted to leave. But Rie was now severely downsized and Riven feared earth was creating its own extinction. Rie was created to reward good, faithful humans and keep the line of communication open between the worlds of mortals and gods. Unfortunately, something had ripped that line to shreds. And that something was a dark wizard named Rogan, who lived thousands of years by stealing magic from other wizards and even using brutal rituals.

That's why Tamara hated humans. She saw them as ungrateful, pathetic, and weak. The only reason she was even able to get to Earth was because the Council of Gods did everything in its power to find flaws in Rogan's magical block of the skies. Only a few could pass through this block the stronger you were, the harder it was. Gods couldn't go down, even in the weakest of vessels. Master of All refused to interfere with Rogan's actions, he believed in his creations’ right of choice. Most of the Gods agreed to leave it at that but Yimkakra refused and as High Chairman of the Council, he could make many decisions in the Master of All's stead. While he wouldn't undo Rogan's deed, Master of All didn't disallow messengers to be sent to change the human's minds or to fight Rogan's evil in its entirety. So the High Chairman decreed that everything be done to send agents from above to Earth, to open the humans’ eyes to Rogan's evil and return them to a belief in Riven and Rie again. Failure would lead to a world of woe since the veil between the living and the dead couldn't hold forever, with so many unable to cross into Rie. Woe was unaffected since it was under the earth. But some evil souls could hide in the in-between since demons weren't allowed in certain sections.

As if it matters, Tamara muttered. She walked up to the spring for a drink of water. Afterwards she stared at her reflection. She had an oval face, soft gray eyes, wavy dark brown hair, a slender figure and dark skin. She wore a dark brown jacket, black top, pants and boots. On her hip she wore a sword and a small knife.

In her angel form she was a soldier, warrior class. At seven feet tall she was muscled and medium built with straight black hair and hard blue eyes. She was elegant and strong. Now she only saw a weak five foot tall human with her personality. In Riven only the gods had gray eyes. Was Yimkakra trying to tell her something?

Tartu, hurry and drink. The dragon wriggled then rose off her arm and jumped in the water. He gurgled and started going around in circles. Tamara couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the excited little dragon.

What do you think you’re doing? a male voice commanded.

Tamara turned to face a frowning man in full armor. The silver glint hurt her eyes; she noticed his black stallion started to act skittish suddenly. Could it be scared of her? Hum, just taking a drink during my walk, knight.

In male clothing? Do you not know the laws here?

Tamara clenched her fists. She wasn’t about to let some pompous male tell her what to do.

Tartu jumped out of the spring and growled at the strange man. The dragon’s eyes had gone red and black smoke flowed out its nostrils.

The knight’s horse went berserk. It threw him off and dashed off in the opposite direction.

Despite what had occurred Tamara couldn’t help feeling worried for the fallen knight. Are you ok? Tartu was just trying to protect me. She walked up to the man.

The knight groaned and sat up. Without his helmet she could see he was just a blonde adult male in
