The Witchlings Blood Moon - Amanda Turner

    Blood Moon (The Witchlings #2)

    Amanda Turner

    Copyright 2010 by Amanda Turner

    Smashwords Edition

Twisted clouds stained with red, angrily blanketed the moon. Ten minutes prior the skies had been still, calm and strangely comforting. There was a lot to be said for normality. Now was most definitely not normal. Something was coming. Something dark, terrifying. Legends said the blood moon brought five phases.

    1. Eternal darkness

    2. Crows

    3. Possession

    4. Five angels of hell

    5. Death of the first born

Shades of crimson viciously splattered the sky above. Each passing moment it grew deeper, more intense. On restful beds, the town of Holbrook slept, unaware that their lives were about to change. Forever.

    And so it began.

    Chapter 1

OMG! wake up Mia, Wake up Sophia's panicked voice echoed through the hall.

She stormed with urgency into Mia's bedroom. Her feet slapped against the wooden floor causing an echo. Mia fumbled around for her alarm clock to see what the time was. She was sure she hadn’t been asleep for long.

Bloody hell, Sophia, it's midnight and you know I have to be up early.

Mia looked in the direction of Sophia's voice. Her eyes squinted involuntarily as she was blinded by the light that shone in from the hall. Her voice slurred and she rubbed her eyes, trying to wake up.

Mia, you are not going to believe this. I couldn’t sleep and you know how I like to open my curtains and watch the sky?- Well, you are not going to believe me when I show you, so come on, get up and get over here.

Wearily, Mia threw back the covers and stomped over to the window. Her feet winced in protest as they came into contact with the icy cold wood floor, her slippers had done a disappearing act. Sophia's shaking hands grabbed at the heavy velvet curtains, and with one clean swoop, she tore them clean off their rails, sending tiny particles of dust dancing in the air.

Now look what you’ve done. Mia was less than impressed by Sophia's lack of regard for their own property. Mia was seconds away from launching into a severe reprimand when a thick redness invaded her vision.

Oh my god, it’s a blood moon... Mia spluttered.

Now she was wide awake. The shock of the scene outside made her skin tingle, as if she was being stabbed by millions of tiny pins.

I told you you wouldn’t believe it, Sophia said in a matter-of-fact tone, smug smile plastered all over her face.

A strong sense of impending doom drenched Mia. It was the first blood moon they had ever seen and they had hoped they never would. The twins had heard of Blood moon curses, but they were always portrayed as scary bedtime stories, rather than something that could actually happen.

They had seen a slight pinky tinged harvest moon a few times, and they were perfectly normal, but this was red, the deepest red, it had to be a blood moon.

This could be bad, Sophia. Mia was unable to draw her eyes away from the window.

Oh, Mia, I know. Should we phone the Holbrook lot? Sophia said with nervousness in her voice.

I... I don’t know. Mia stared for what seemed like an eternity.

It really was the most beautiful sight, like a giant ruby dangling on an invisible sinewy thread. Sophia imagined it mounted in gold and adorning her middle finger.

Lets wait until the morning, I'm sure a few hours won't hurt and they may have already seen it, Mia said with the hope that it would all be some kind of weird bad dream, and not nearly as bad as she was beginning to fear.

OK, Mia, but I will feel better when we have spoken to Aunt Catherine, said Sophia as she twisted her bottom lip nervously.

Mia would feel better when she had spoken to Aunt Catherine too, but she tried hard not to let Sophia see her doubts. Sophia had always been the worrier and it had always fallen to Mia to make her feel better. Not that she minded. She loved her twin sister to death, but sometimes it got a bit much, especially since their mum and dad had been tragically taken from them. Their parents had left them financially sound, and if they needed anything they just clicked their fingers and it was there, but that was not the same as having loving parents. Mia sometimes thought that they should have moved to Holbrook to live with Aunt Catherine like she had asked them to do. Catherine had become their surrogate parent as she was their coven's main elder. The twins hadn't wanted to move, Moorbridge was their home, and they were almost nineteen,- They should have been able to take care of themselves. Of course, that task would be a lot easier if Sophia didn’t permanently land herself in one scrape after another.

There was the time she spell cast at school against a group of girls who had been continually nasty to her out of jealousy of course. They had cornered her in the girls changing room and she had told them to take a cold shower, which had resulted in a row of five toilets bursting their pipes and showering the girls in nasty toilet waste. They knew she was somehow responsible, but luckily, Mia had managed to diffuse the rumours of her being some kind of freak witch,-as they had put it. Another incident was when Sophia had cast a love spell that went completely wrong. The boy had accused her of sexual harassment and she got arrested. Mia couldn’t leave her to her own devices for five minutes and that put a lot of strain on their relationship. But Sophia was her sister and Mia loved her and that would never change.

It was 7.15 when Roxy woke up. She squirmed rather ungraciously as she stretched out her willowy limbs. Her eyes drifted over to where Luke was still sleeping peacefully. Gently, she tickled his face with her hair– her usual wake up call for Luke much to his dismay. Roxy giggled playfully.

    Aww, Rox.

Luke rubbed his face roughly to appease the tickling feeling. Once he had his bearings he jumped up, pinned Roxy to the bed and began rubbing his manly stubble all over her face. His mouth opened as he licked his lips and covered Roxy's face in wet, sloppy kisses.

LUKE ha ha LUKE stop ha ha.

That was their usual morning ritual completed. It had been that way every morning since Luke had been released from his curse as Midnight. These had been the best few weeks of her life. In fact, it had been the best Christmas she had ever spent. Now though, Christmas break was over and the new school term was about to begin. As Luke got out of bed and headed for the bathroom, Roxy felt a sinking in the pit of her stomach. Today she would have to face Mr. Smith for the first time since she had helped her mother and Brooke escape from his clutches. No one had heard anything about him or any other witch finder since that day. Roxy knew she wouldn’t be that lucky:- he was still there, she could somehow sense his evil presence, always looming in the back of her mind. He was the reason why Catherine, her mother, had been unable to return home and was in hiding at Mrs. Nero’s house. Thankfully Roxy was able to visit every day and she and her father had spent a lovely Christmas there with Luke. But it wasn’t the same as having her home. Brooke was also in hiding at Mrs. Nero’s, and Roxy really felt for her. It must be awful for a teenage girl to be locked up every day and Roxy now realised how even taking an evening stroll with her boyfriend should not be taken for granted. The only upside to going back to school was that she would get to have a long, girly chat with her all time best friend Amber. Roxy had missed her over the school break. She adored spending time with Luke but sometimes she needed a girl to confide in. None of the Elites, especially Brooke, could fill that role. Roxy's tummy niggled with the balance of nerves and excitement.

Luke had reappeared from the bathroom ready for school (looking super super sexy as always) and tapped his watch urging Roxy to get a move on.

Chill Luke, we’ve got ages yet, said Roxy as she threw back the covers, and
