About this ebook
The first book in Laura Bradford’s debut Jenkins & Burns mystery series!
The Jersey Shore has always been known for warm sand, lively boardwalks, and the promise of carefree summer days. This season the small scenic town of Ocean Point, New Jersey, is not nearly as carefree as tourists would hope. The discovery of the body of a young woman is the first in a string of seemingly random and senseless murders, murders connected only by a warning from the same boardwalk fortune-teller.
It’s a crisis that puts local detective Mitch Burns on edge, and his job in jeopardy. It’s up to him to solve the crimes and protect the livelihood of the town, a livelihood that relies almost entirely on tourists. With the help of newly hired local reporter Elise Jenkins, the two step out to discover who the killer is, before another body is found.
This book was originally published under the title Jury of One.

Reviews for Deadly Readings
22 ratings5 reviews
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5For a young adult reader. Too simplistic.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Just an ok showing from a first novel. People are being murdered all over Ocean Point, New Jersy directly after visiting a psychic. Elise Jenkins and Mitch Burns connect to try to figure out who done it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I remember seeing this book in the store and reading the synopsis on the back and really wanting to read it. I just wish I hadn't waited so long to read it. Jury of One was a fantastic quick read. It is a mystery, suspense, romance and some Christianity all in one. It is one of the better Christian Fiction books I have read. I wasn't overwhelmed with a lot of religion. There is a murder in Ocean Point, New Jersey, a small quiet town. Murder doesn't happen here. More murders start happening. The detective Mitch Burns is the one who has to solve the murders. A new reporter Elise Jenkins does the stories for the local paper about the murders and works with Detective Mitch Burns and the police department. And a little romance starts to blossom. This is the first book I have read by Laura Bradford. There are 2 more books in the Jenkins & Burns Mysteries. I think I will be looking for those books to read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Mitch Burns is a police detective in Ocean Point NJ. At just about the time Elise Jenkins arrives from Missouri to work at the local paper, people start getting murdered, and the only thing they have in common is a prediction of danger from a fortune-teller on the boardwalk. There is no shortage of suspects, and Mitch & Elise join forces to discover what is going on .Not the "great American novel" but a short, believable murder mystery that, although fairly easy to predict, still satisfies.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Originally published as Jury of One, Deadly Readings is a good solid debut mystery. The book's Jersey Shore setting rang true to this fan of Chris Grabenstein's Ceepak and Boyle mysteries. When tourist dollars are involved, solving crime quickly is the name of the game.Elise Jenkins and Mitch Burns are the two main characters in this book, and they are almost too good to be true. I almost wanted to rough them up with a fault or two to make them more realistic. However, what really frosted my cake was the fact that the newspaper Elise works for is 100% ethical, and this proves that paying attention to the real world has made me too jaded and cynical. But you know what? It was nice reading about a newspaper staff that believed finding a killer was more important than the headlines it could grab. It was nice reading about a newspaper reporter who worked with the police instead of against them. Although whodunit was a bit too easy to deduce and there were a couple of questionable procedural issues in Deadly Readings, it was still an enjoyable read for this old cynic. I may just have to track down more books in this series!
