The basement stinks of dirt, oil, and blood.
And something else.
The stench of decay. Of rotting meat.
Chicken liver smells like this when left to stew in a hot summer sun.
It’s dark down there, but don’t be scared. Take my hand and let’s go a little deeper.
Age weary, wooden steps sink in to the bowels of an obsidian soup.
Our foot falls don’t make a sound.
The stink and darkness aside, there’s something else about this basement that strums against our nerves, plucks at the sinews of our being, froths inside our minds. But, to know what it is, we must continue the descent.
