INTRODUCTION
Without question one of the most misunderstood—and certainly most maligned—names in popular music history belongs to a highly unusual sextet. While most rock groups typically consist of three, four, or at most five members, the Universal Monsters had the good fortune of having six complete and utter individuals. Six people
from different walks of life, unified together by a single vision. A vision that would take the world by storm in a whirlwind blitzkrieg lasting three years, topping the musical charts time and again, only to then fade from the public eye and be forgotten forever.
However, their story is hard to forget. It is one of love, of unity, of misunderstandings, dismemberment, and, inevitably, demise. This is their story, told in their own words.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Major interviews have been conducted with Dracula, the Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s Monster (who shall be referred to as Frankenstein, or at times, Frank) specifically for this biography. Supplementary text by the Mummy and Wolf Man comes mostly from previous television program and magazine interviews. And as he doesn’t speak—and since no one can find him anyway—the Creature from the Black Lagoon had little to offer.
PART ONE
WELCOME TO MY BAND
With years passed and lost success in Hollywood, Count Dracula was at his wit’s end. Forgotten after his tremendous movie career, which included such distinguished films as Dracula, Son of Dracula and House of Dracula, he found himself, with great disdain, working for a surprisingly low wage as a mechanic for Mercedes Benz.
My cape kept getting in the way,
Dracula recalls. Jimmy Thorkelson, my boss, did not like me wearing the cape to work. I always tried to explain to him who I was but he did not care. He just wanted that car fixed by closing time and felt that the cape was a big hindrance. I still sometimes wonder, if I had been Veronica Lake or Lana Turner, would he have treated me that way?
Whether a beautiful woman or a menacing undead being wanting to drink blood, Count Dracula knew that he was cut out for more than fixing cars. He’d had a taste of stardom and liked it. There was a dream inside him. It was time for the next offensive. Time to reinvent himself, while at the same time bring back
