It is the beginning of their summer break from school and they have a full agenda planned out ahead of them, riding their own personal horses on the secret HORSE CRAZY PALS trail, through the woods and to the lake around Wigins. It appears they'll enjoy a summer filled with not only horseback riding but to lavish each of their horses with the utmost in care and attention.

Another group of kids, the mean kids who also reside in Wigins, have made a kind of secret pact to disrupt the HORSE CRAZY PALS designs and plans for a summer committed to their club and to their horses. Their leader, Luke and his club are intent on turning these do-good-er, spoiled rich kid types summer into a total disaster. But, they haven't considered that because the HORSE CRAZY PALS offer the very best in care, love and attention to each of their horses, that a huge black stallion Midnight is sent to assist them and to thwart the intentions of the mean kids. But Midnight is not what the MEAN KIDS had in mind when they planned out their series of attacks against the HORSE CRAZY PALS.

The HORSE CRAZY PALS series attempts to offer young readers a kind of fairy tale, make-believe story, that is filled with some parts make-believe and also illustrates the challenges our younger generation might face in real life, what might actually occur in today's society. It is also a story that pits good against evil, virtue against the misdeeds of others who seek to devise bad happenings to inherently good kids, a kind of bullying process against those kids less capable of defending themselves. The series of events that unfolds eventually proves the virtuous HORSE CRAZY PALS, with the help of their guardian angel, Midnight, do persevere over the inherently evil, mean kids.

    CHAPTER 1

    THE SCARE

Early one summer morning, Cynthia rode her horse, Cobalt, down the trail past Lilac Lane. Cynthia shivered as the cold morning air chilled her. She told Cobalt, as her teeth chattered, Brr, cold, hunh, Cobalt.

Cynthia zipped up her hoodie as Cobalt snorted loudly and shook his head, his dark mane waving over and back. Cynthia patted Cobalt’s neck, comforting her treasure; I know it’s too early. I know you didn’t want to wake up and get moving quite yet. But, we don’t want everyone to see us going down the secret trail, right?

Cynthia rode along and guided Cobalt onto the Horse Crazy Pals Trail. She gazed about and sighed, Oh, I love it here. This is my favorite trail. There are plenty of places for you to eat, Cobalt. Then, there is the lake, so you can have a drink and have a nice rest. And, if we get too hot or anything we can take a dip in the cool water! I like swimming in there.

As Cynthia and Cobalt slowly moved along the Horse Crazy Pals Trail, she wondered, Boy, do you think Abby and Mackenzie woke up on time? They said they would meet us at the lake this morning. They better not still be sleeping. If they are late, I will have to just tell them that tardiness is not a good way for our group. After all, the Horse Crazy Pals do what they say they are going to do, and they do it when they say, not whenever the mood strikes them. No sir!

Cynthia rode down the Horse Crazy Pals trail and Cobalt snorted again. She nodded, I’ll bet you are hungry, right boy? I know, I know, you like to nibble on all the clover there by the lake. I can have a drink of my hot chocolate, too.

Cynthia and Cobalt reached the meadow by the lake. Cynthia pulled back on the reins, Okay, boy, we’re here. You can eat and have a drink, too.

Cynthia dismounted and pulled the reins down from Cobalt’s neck. Cobalt began to graze on all the clover in the field. Cynthia walked over and climbed up on a large rock. She gazed out on the lake. It looked like a million shimmering diamonds on the surface of the water, all glittering and pretty as the morning sun blazed down.

Cynthia pulled her backpack from around her shoulders. She unzipped the top and pulled out her thermos. As she poured the hot chocolate into the cup lid, she exclaimed, Oh, it is so nice here. This is my favorite place, I think. Cobalt loves it here, too. So does Abby and Mackenzie.

Cynthia blew on her hot chocolate, taking small sips. She watched Cobalt grazing away. Cynthia thought to herself, Oh yea! We are off school all summer. Mackenzie, Abby, Audrey and I will be riding our horses all summer! Maybe Alisa, Lois and Megan, maybe they can, too. But, Alisa and Lois sometimes play with the other girls who are mean to us. They go over to the other side of Wiggins and play with the mean girls over there. Those mean girls don’t have any horses. They can’t go riding all over and explore. I don’t see why Alisa and Lois want to go and see them? Oh wait, I know! They go over there because one of the girl’s, Carlie, her daddy owns an ice cream store. He gives them free ice cream.

Cynthia sat down on the rock. She watched as the mist of the early morning rolled up off the lake. Having thought she heard something, Cynthia set her cup of hot chocolate down and stood up, peering about. She glanced about and then she thought she heard a noise. She looked about but it was most difficult to see anything too far off. She felt a chill run through her as the mist seemed to be playing tricks on her. She murmured, I wish Abby and Mackenzie would hurry up and get here. I’m out here all by myself. They said they would get up this morning and meet me. Instead, here I sit, like some stupid nitwit, sitting around out in the fog!

Cynthia kept looking as she heard more commotion off in the distance. Suddenly, she gasped as she saw them, a pack of wild dogs bounding from the woods.

The dogs charged ahead, snarling, running, barking and yelping. Cynthia felt a terrible panic as she quickly called out for Cobalt. He raised his head and snorted loudly as Cynthia yelled out, Cobalt, quick, run away!

The wild dogs charged ahead, running straight for Cobalt. Cynthia yelled again, Cobalt, run, run away!

Cobalt stammered and whinnied, but he didn’t move. The dogs yelped and barked as they began to circle Cobalt. The dogs kept circling, one of them jumping up, trying to
