About this ebook

The Fear of Four is a collection of four short stories from my past.
In the story "A Cry For Help", we never know when we'll be called to help others, or what we'll find when we get there.
"The Rain", was inspired by a now defunct steel plant in Utah. In marriage we share everything, but sometimes not everything should be shared.
"The Bill Collector" is a story about things which may seem simple at first, but if not taken care of, may develop into something beyond one's own control.
With "Rigor Mortis", one never knows what can happen when we turn our backs on the path we are on, or reject opportunities we are presented with. The grass is rarely greener on the other side.

I hope you enjoy these four short stories as much as I enjoyed resurrecting them from my writing vault.

    A Cry for Help

Clawing his way to the surface from sleep, James reached for the phone that was shattering his peaceful slumber. He felt shaky, as most anyone does when startled from sleep. Luckily, Sheila was still asleep. She could sleep through anything.

Hello. He mumbled into the receiver.

Doctor? Please, you have to come quick! I do not feel well.

The man on the other end sounded desperate and he cleared his head. When he and his wife had moved out to this small mountain town, he had grown to love the people of this remote community. He was always available to the neighbors he loved, no matter what the hour.

What's the problem, can you describe how you feel. The sleep drained from his voice and he was all professionalism.

I don't know exactly. I have pains in my chest, head, and all over. Please, come quickly. The phantom voice on the opposite end of the receiver declared.

Sheila was now awake beside him, the worried look on his face made her all the more attentive.

Give me the address and I will be right out. James replied as he began scrambling out of bed with the receiver still pasted to his ear.

Sheila did not seem happy at his leaving at three in the morning, but she had gotten used to it.

I'm in the basement of the old cabin at the top of Kamus Bluff. Do you know where that is? The voice spoke desperately.

    "Yes,
