About this ebook
Flash fiction is an excellent way for writers to tighten prose, learn the elements of story without getting lost in a novel-length manuscript and explore different genres without a big time commitment. This book provides fifty-two story prompts simple enough for the beginning writer to start with, yet complex enough for the more advanced writer to expand on. Originally designed as a year long challenge to write one story per week, the prompts are versatile enough to serve as daily or occasional exercises as well, and easily expandable into longer forms of prose. Also included are hints for getting started, and tips on how to quickly cut and shape a draft into something polished and artistic.

Flash 52 - Jamie DeBree
Introduction
Flash fiction is a distilled form of storytelling that takes a complete story and reduces it to the absolute minimum. Though there is no standard definition as far as length goes, it’s common to see the maximum allowed word count at one thousand words. That is the standard that I use when writing flash stories, and the constraint I kept in mind when writing these prompts. Though some may seem to be outside the scope of such a short piece, the challenge is in writing each one, and then cutting and cutting some more until only the very heart of the story remains.
One of the wonderful things about flash fiction (aside from the ability to read it in a very short amount of time) is that for writers, it can be an invaluable tool for learning how to write tight
. There’s no room in the space of about four double-spaced pages for embellishments of either dialogue or description. The writer has to convey mood, setting and story in the most concise way possible - a skill which once cultivated, can improve longer works as
