All eyes were staring at Mark Stafford, as he entered the classroom. School had already been in session for over a month, which made it even more awkward being the new kid in school. You’d think that Mark would have been used to it by that time, because it was the fourth time that his family had moved in twelve years. His dad promised that it would be their last move.

Mark’s dad had recently retired from the Air Force, after serving for twenty years. Mark wondered why his dad couldn’t find a civilian job in Connecticut, where they had lived for the last two years of his dad’s enlistment. Instead, they moved clear across the country to Empire, Colorado.

Alan Stafford was the new manager of a big outdoor wilderness store in Empire. His wife, Paula was a registered nurse, and was able to find
