About this ebook

Katlynn works hard in order to achieve her dream of someday opening her own daycare. When she meets Duke at the all-night diner where she's a waitress, she's drawn to his physique and his sense of humor. But she doesn't believe him when he tells her he's a secret service member in charge of watching over a presidential candidate.

Duke's attraction to the quick-witted redhead starts from the moment he looks into her eyes. He never picks up women for a one night stand, but he wants Kat bad. They spend a very special day together at her apartment where he tries to convince her that he really is with the secret service. But then she slips out in the evening, seemingly unwilling to continue what could have been the relationship of a lifetime.

One snowy night fate brings them together again and this time Kat must make a choice that will make them a family or leave them out in the cold.

    January, 2000

The cowbell jangled against the glass door, loud enough to be heard over the oldies music blaring from the boom box in the tiny office.

    Kat! You got a customer!

Katlynn tossed her cigarette in the canister by the back door and stepped into the greasy haze filling the kitchen. I'm on it, Ted.

    Wash your hands!

Muttering under her breath, she did a hasty scrub job, wiped her hands on her apron and slipped her order book out of her pocket. This late at night most customers didn't want a big meal. Probably a cup of coffee—black—and he or she would leave within an hour.

A hunched figure sat at the faded Formica counter. A brown trench coat was thrown haphazardly over the swivel stool next to his. Blond hair tumbled into his eyes, obscuring them from view. The menu was open and it looked like he was absorbed in it. Not a regular then. Kat unwrapped a stick of gum and popped it into her mouth.

    Can I help you, sweetie?

He didn't look up. Um, yeah. I'll start with coffee. Black.

    Right away.

At twenty-five, working the graveyard shift at Ted's Diner wasn't her dream job, but it was paving the way. By the time she started her shift at midnight, she was already worn out. Watching preschoolers from eight to five was rewarding, but exhausting. Someday soon she'd have enough money scraped up to start her own daycare.

Hot, black liquid streamed into a permanently stained mug that had seen countless cups
