    Tarragon

    A FRYING PAN FILLED with sliced potatoes spits grease on the stove top while I sit at the kitchen table and flip through one of Tarragon’s books. She used to leave them on my bed, a new book every couple of weeks, hoping I would read them. I usually did. Back then I had just finished the office administration program at the local college and started working at the steel plant. Somehow I’m still there, but thanks to the old man I usually end up as somebody’s doormat. And maybe that’s only fair. Karmic. The old man’s connections got me the job in the first place.

    In a way, I suppose he got me a date with Tarragon too. I’ve always hated grapes—raisins too—but he raised hell if I forgot them, so I was checking the red ones for bruises when she surprised with her soft and slightly nasal voice.

    Do you know what they spray those with?
