Five years, together every moment, holidays spent with both their families, tours abroad, camping trips…. The non-refundable deposit for their vacation at fabulous Castillo Couples Resort, Nassau, preyed on her mind for weeks, a nagging reminder of her loss, her failure, the simple, agonizing fact he didn’t love her anymore. Although she supposed she could go ahead and take the trip, an island paradise populated by couples in love strolling hand in hand on the beach struck her as too dang depressing for words.

Castillo Resorts, how may I direct your call? The woman’s island twang nearly made Terese change her mind; she needed a vacation badly, but an image of Bruce heading out the door of the condo that they’d shared, large cardboard box of DVDs in his arms, swam in her mind. That bitch waiting in the car—masses of silky blonde hair falling around her shoulders. The sports car did not constitute the only new body out there. Cynthia’s engineered-for-sex chassis—Terese’s gorge rose at the thought of that man-eater with her Bruce. He’s not my Bruce anymore, and I have to get used to that.

Hello?

The inquiry brought her back to the present. Calling off her vacation. Right. Yes, I would like to cancel my reservations for next week. Her voice trembled and tears flooded her eyes. She didn’t want to do this. She wanted Bruce to come tearing in the front door, wild eyed and consumed with guilt, and tell her he’d made a huge mistake, wanted her back, and…. No! Straightening her shoulders, she waited to be reminded of her nonrefundable reservation, and that would be that. She could stay home and rearrange the few pieces of furniture that Miss Blonde-and-Light-Fingered hadn’t convinced Bruce to walk off with. She cringed. In her shock, she’d allowed herself to be robbed of not only her boyfriend, but also her living room set and bed. He’s screwing that whore in my bed!

Ms. Vance? I regret to inform you that the deposit is—

Nonrefundable, I know. It doesn’t matter. I just want to cancel. She fought unsuccessfully to suppress the sob in her voice.

The agent’s tone softened. Would you like to tell me why? A pause ensued while Terese mulled over her question. Of course, she didn’t want to tell an anonymous voice on the phone. How awful that would be, and yet, why not? In a flash of rage, she decided the more people who knew of Bruce’s turpitude the better!
