About this ebook

Easter Sunday, Ward gets a call from his estranged wife. She says she caught a glimpse of their two boys in Lincoln City where they were presumed drowned a year ago today. It has to be a cruel joke, except Ward can hear his wife falling apart on the phone. And that tiny part of him that still hopes, that hasn’t followed the rest of him into the black pit his life has become, just has to drive out there and see for himself.

When the phone rang on Easter morning, Ward Fullsome was stomping around his curtained apartment in his robe, swearing and shaking his right hand like a soundless maraca. Distracted already because it was the day, he’d stuck his hand into his nuked KFC chicken leftovers and burned himself up to his wrist. Hadn’t even gotten the TV turned on for the game.

Now he kicked the KFC bucket and the TV Guide so the scattered between the ratty couch and coffee table and lunged into the kitchen for the phone, ripped it off the wall with his left hand. "What?"

    W-Ward...

    Merilee? His ex-wife. Shit.

Ward’s legs got wobbly under him and he thought he was going to puke. Of course it was her. Because it was the day, wasn’t it. One year later.

Phone to his ear, he staggered to the sink and yanked on the cold water. Stuck his hand under it. What do you—?

"I saw our kids, Ward. I saw them. I swear. Alive and walking around. Jimmy just as clear a deer on the road by the cemetery. Little Josh following him like...like..."

Ward felt a roaring in his head as she squeaked and gasped into the phone. She’d gone down there. Or she was there. Christ. Lincoln City. The Oregon coast. Ward’s stomach rolled and he gritted his teeth to hold it in.

They were like bunny rabbits or something. They just... They just...

Shut up, Merilee? he said. Why’re you doing this?

    I wasn’t imagining, Ward! I – saw – the – boys!

And her intensity forced him to remember too. What it had been like to come home almost two years back from his
