Author’s Note:
While the adventures of the 3 Ikes of Geekoterre are totally fictitious, some of the most unlikely events in this book, particularly involving technology, are fact, or quite possible. However, things such as the heliodisplay computer, graphene paper and the growing of diamonds, are all known scientific realities at the time of writing this book.
When you purchase a copy of this book you also give some really needy students a high school education. These are students who will never see the inside of a high school classroom without your help. On their behalf, we say thank you. Perhaps one day, you can visit us in Vanuatu and get to meet some of these students.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Geekoterre, Cyber Space
Chapter 1
Tell us the story again, Dad,
Tike, Mike and Spike called as they bounded down the stairs and raced their father into the garden. It was his special day off, when he would sit and talk of things that had gone on before the kids were old enough to remember.
Their father, Professor Roxley Webster (Prof Rox, or Prof for short) grinned and settled himself into the garden swing. He loved this view, with the scent of the flowers gently wafting over them. He could gaze across the valley and see the beautiful royal palace on the other side, where the king lived with his family. Geekoterre looked so peaceful, but it had not always been like that.
He glanced down at his triplets who looked so much alike, yet had personalities as different as chalk and cheese. He loved them more than life itself. What would I do without them?
he sighed.
Come on, Dad, tell us,
grinned Mike.
Yep, tell us!
chimed in Tike, doing a triple backward flip before settling down on the grass at his father’s feet.
Spike picked up her lute, a very old guitar that had once belonged to her great-great-grandmother. It was the envy of all her friends. Her voice rang out strong and clear. Spike had won the ‘Super Cy-Girls Singing Contest’ when she was just 7 cy-years old and had gone from strength to strength ever since.
"Tell us tell us, tell us do,
Tell us like it’s all brand new.
Tell us of the things of old,
Tell how you were strong and bold."
As Spike’s beautiful voice rang out, her Ultimate Personal Communication Centre (UPC) sprang into action. Quickly it captured her rhyme and added it to all her other songs.
On Everyone’s first Cy-birthday, which was celebrated on the same day, no matter when they were born, they were given their own UPC. Many kids could use a computer even before they could talk, or took their first steps. Even babies loved to interact with the heliodisplay images floating in free space above their cots. This IO2 computer technology, with its control by voice and eye contact, had totally revolutionized the way everyone used their personal computers and tablets.
You’ve come a long way with your songs since you had those extra lessons with the professional song writer, Mariah Carey,
Dad smiled. Keep it up. You’ll be great one day. They’ll call you Spike, The Singing Geeko.
They all laughed, as her father ran his hand through her stubbornly spiky hair. No matter what Spike did, it always looked as if she had just woken up.
Spike had been named Stephanie by her mother, Mike was Michael and Tike was named after his grandfather Thomas. When they were first learning to speak Tike had difficulty saying Stephanie. Perhaps because of her hair, he had called her Spike. He called himself Tike instead of Thomas, but it was Uncle Dave who had nicknamed the triplets ‘The Three Ikes’. Their nicknames Tike, Spike and Mike had stuck, until no one even remembered their true names.
Triplets are born only once in every 500,000 births. When you three were born, some saw it as a sign of good luck. Others said it was a bad omen. Your mother and I didn’t care what anyone thought. For us it was the most wonderful thing that had ever happened to us,
Prof grinned.
But then things started to go terribly, terribly wrong in Geekoterre.
Prof shifted uncomfortably, as he recalled the things that had happened.
Huge storms raged on the surface of the sun. The largest solar flare registered X28 on the Solar Richter scale. Geekoterre was bombarded with stratospheric rivers of solar energy, carrying all sorts of heavy solar particles, ionized plasma and radiation.
A look of intense sadness flickered across Prof’s face.
Locusts that had long been dormant in the ground suddenly came to life and ate the crops. What the locusts didn’t eat, the cosmic rays killed off. There was hunger everywhere. Good drinking water was hard to find, as rivers were turned to blood-red from the cosmic dust,
Prof Rox reached for his ever present jug of water and poured himself a glass. He tried to get the Ikes to drink 12 glasses of water each day, saying it was good for their health.
Your body doesn’t register that it’s thirsty until after the fact,
he often told them. The trio just laughed at him and teased him about ‘sloshing’ around. They said he would get sick from water intoxication. However, the three Ikes did drink a lot more water than their friends, who preferred sugar-loaded soft drinks.
"Your uncle and I were working on a secret project. We had fully developed what the old 1960’s Planet Earth television series, Star Trek, had only dreamed of. We knew how to produce negative energy space-craft, so as to create hyper-fast space travel, capable of reaching distant galaxies. However, we had a more immediate need. We believed that if we could capture enough antimatter, it could be fired into space to form a protective canopy over Geekoterre. There was however, only one place to harvest lots of antimatter."
Tike pressed his hands together with his fingers extended. He knew what was coming.
On the blue Planet Earth, beams of antimatter particles are created in the top of the towering cumulonimbus thunderstorm clouds, before being hurtled into outer space. These storms can be terribly destructive, but there’s also a majestic beauty about them,
Prof glanced up in awe at the cloudless sky, as if he was seeing a thunderstorm in his mind’s eye.
Glad we don’t have thunderstorms here,
Spike shuddered.
We’d made a supersonic net that we believed could capture antimatter,
Prof continued. But we had to get close to the Earth’s atmosphere, where the anti-matter was released. If we were too far out we’d miss it, but too close in and the density of Earth’s atmosphere would burn up our cyjets.
Prof grinned as Tike copied the action of a cyjet diving down, skimming through the thermosphere close to Earth then quickly climbing away.
We needed more time to perfect our project, but we had to protect Geekoterre.
Prof’s voice was subdued, Whole families were dying from radiation related sicknesses.
He stretched his long legs, as if his body was reacting to the pressure of his memories.
Day after day we scanned the weather systems of Earth, as there are around 2000 thunderstorms at any one time.
Prof grinned as Tike continued his pretend dives. Finally we saw just what we were looking for. Leaping into our cyjets we zoomed through space. When we got close enough we released our nets between our jets and skimmed along a line of back-to-back squall thunderstorms. These are a long thin chain of storms that can stretch over 600 kilometres.
Tike flew his imaginary cyjet back and forth over the thunderstorms. He dreamed of the day he would be a pilot.
After successfully collecting the valuable cargo we raced back to Geekoterre and dumped the antimatter into specially built hi-tech storage units. After about a dozen runs we believed we almost had enough to form the antimatter barrier.
Tike unlocked his hands and pulled out his special carving knife and concentrated on stabbing the ground. Mike stared out across the valley. His face was set like stone, showing no emotion at all. The trio didn’t like this part of the story, but they never let Prof leave it out.
Spike started strumming her lute and softly began to sing:
"Everybody has a song,
Sing it loud and sing it long.
Sing of joys and sing of tears,
Sing of hope and sing of fears.
For everybody has a song."
Prof continued quietly. "Uncle Dave and I had flown 12 sorties in just 8 days. We made sure the other pilots took their compulsory 12 hours rest, but we chose to ignore the sign on the wall in our office which reads: ‘When you let the urgent rule over you, you’ll try things you shouldn’t do,’" Prof Rox sighed.
I should’ve made your uncle stay home. I should’ve taken the inside position instead of him. I should’ve known he’d take that extra risk. He always was a wild one,
Prof sipped some water.
"Uncle Dave had just passed the net of antimatter back to me
