Author

Michael Grant

Michael Grant, author of the Gone series, the Messenger of Fear series, the Magnificent Twelve series, and the Front Lines trilogy, has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a military family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as three schools in France. Even as an adult he kept moving, and in fact he became a writer in part because it was one of the few jobs that wouldn’t tie him down. His fondest dream is to spend a year circumnavigating the globe and visiting every continent. Yes, even Antarctica. He lives in California with his wife, Katherine Applegate, with whom he cowrote the wildly popular Animorphs series. You can visit him online at www.themichaelgrant.com and follow him on Twitter @MichaelGrantBks.

    CHAPTER one

One dark, dreary day there was a gatherin’ of Mafia Dons in a city – which will remain unnamed on account of that unfortunate incident that happened in Appalachia, New York so many years ago when the feds arrested a bunch of us just because the families were havin’ a nice quite sit-down.

Over a couple glasses of vino, a little Frittelle di Riso, and a few cups of espresso, we talked about old times –for instance: who got whacked, who was doin’ time in the joint, who was diddlin’ whose comare, etc, etc, and so forth and so on.

As the vino began to flow, suddenly, Willie The Weasel Bagatelle, waxin’ nostalgic, allowed as to how things were not workin’ out the way he thought they would.

The other Dons, they all shook their heads in agreement, even the old Moustache Petes,’ who had no idea what the hell he was talkin’ about.
