About this ebook
“This is the story of an extraordinary boy with a brilliant mind, a heart of gold, and a tortured soul. It is the story of an illness, a fight to live, and a race against death.
I want to share the story, and the pain, the courage, the love, and what I learned in living through it. I want Nick's life to be not only a tender memory for us, but a gift to others. . . . I would like to offer people hope and the realities we lived with. I want to make a difference. My hope is that someone will be able to use what we learned, and save a life with it.”—Danielle Steel
From the day he was born, Nick Traina was his mother's joy. By nineteen, he was dead. This is Danielle Steel's powerful, personal story of the son she lost and the lessons she learned during his courageous battle against darkness. Sharing tender, painful memories and Nick's remarkable journals, Steel brings us a haunting duet between a singular young man and the mother who loved him—and a harrowing portrait of a masked killer called manic depression, which afflicts between two and three million Americans.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A families battle with mental illness and how it can reek havoc .
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book touched me very deeply. Danielle Steel's gut wrenching search to figure out what is wrong with her son Nick, to enable him to grow and achieve and offer some sense of normalcy for him is incredibly captivating. You so badly want him to find the strength and desire to continue the battle and go on. This is by far her best writing. The truth and desperation draws you in and her strength in sharing her struggles to manage this tragic disease truly rip your heart open. This is a book I will never forget.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Intensely moving and personal account of a mother's love for her son.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Now I love Danielle Steel with everything she's got. She is truly one of the best authors in the world next to James Patterson although totally different genres. This book was the saddest and the most touching story I have ever read. It is so amazing how loving Danielle is and the things she has been through in such a long life that she is lived, and all her precious children that she has had to spend those years with. No wonder she continues to write the amazing books that she does, she can get inspiration from her own relationships and family members. She is an amazing author, her son Nick was a great kid, very handsome and loving and its a shame his life ended so soon. But for the time that he was here on earth, she was a great mother to him and I am sure he was proud to call her his mother. Love is everything and so is family.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a great book, I really enjoyed reading it, although it is sad. I have a sister with bipolar disorder and this book gave me so much insight into this crippling disease. Highly recommended
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the life story of Nick Traina, Danielle Steel's son.She wrote this book to help other people deal with family members who suffer from bi-polar manic depression although it took her many years to get him the help he needed , and in the end it took his life. This book tells a very candid truth bout what Nick, her family and her wen thru.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A friend of mine lent me this book, and I was a little apprehensive about reading it, given it was written by Danielle Steel. However, I was quite surprised by how moving this book was, and read it in two sittings. This is the story of Steel's son Nick, who suffered from severe manic-depression his whole life, to the extent that he finally took his own life at 19 because of it. It's a powerful story of their struggle to help Nick with his illness and to let him live as close to a normal life as possible. Steel doesn't mince words or sugar-coat anything; she details every bit of his life, including entries from his journals that must have been heart-wrenching for her, as his mother, to have read. I think this would be an important book for anyone who knows someone who suffers from mental illness to read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is the touching story of Danielle Steel and her son Nick who was severely mentally ill. She had the means to help him in incredible ways, but the illness took its own direction despite a wealth (literally and figuratively) of opportunity.
